Not only did he lie to me, he also thought I'm bloody stupid. Last month, when he received his phone call and sneaked off into the living room believing I couldnât hear, well, I gave George a spoonful of food and quietly made my way to eavesdrop from outside the door. He was talking to a policeman, or woman, and he kept mentioning Melissaâs name. Then he asked what care home in Epsom she was staying in before he began asking all other kinds of questions, such as âcan she get out of this open prison thingâ. I found it difficult to keep up, given his muffled voice and lack of any detail. Finally, I dashed back into the kitchen when the conversation was obviously concluding. I deciphered they must have released Melissa Reid, or she was on the verge of being discharged. Well, she had me to deal with too, not just her darling Matthew.
âWho was that?â I asked casually, feeding George once again.
He looked in a total daze, lost within himself.
âEh?â he replied, still staring at the mobile in his hand.
âI said, who was that, on the phone?â
Finally, he peered up, and I noticed all the colour was drained from his cheeks; not that there was much there to begin with. Matt looked permanently haggard, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
âErm, wrong number,â he lied.
Deciding to let it go, I didnât want another row in front of George, but his constant covering up was beginning to take its toll on me. Matt left the room without a word and I contemplated why the police would inform him that his ex-mother-in-law was now living in a care home. Epsom heâd said, the place where Matt lived with them, and the place where they kept me hidden in the woods during my pregnancy. There canât be many care homes in Epsom, can there? He could easily track her down if he wanted to, but would he seriously want to rekindle the past? The hideous past. It played on my mind ever since, but I somehow stored it away, alongside numerous other dark thoughts. But later that Sunday night, following our conversation regarding his job, I found out where he was really going the next day. You see, I watched him from the kitchen window during the weekend. He was in the garden, tapping away on his phone, and he looked up and caught me spying on him. Neither of us said anything, but we didnât have to. Iâd seen enough.
So, heâs planning to clean out his apartment, is he? Well, the night before, after Iâd shown him the letter from John Brookes and his fake tears, I plied him with whisky. He could never resist. Later, as he lay on the bed comatose, I held his phone to his face and opened it using facial recognition. Sneaking into the en suite, I read his messages and found out he intended to visit Melissa the following day. I can be quite the little detective when I put my mind to it.
