Chapter Fifteen

The next day Charlotte couldn’t shake the feeling of having crossed a monumental threshold with Caleb. Something shifted, they took a step forward. There was no way to deny how attracted she was to him, and she didn’t want to anymore. Even though they’d been out late, she was up by seven a.m. and had already completed a run to the park and back. She’d even been so distracted thinking about Caleb that she accidentally ran an extra mile. She wasn’t sure what his expectations were for them to hang out one-on-one, and she wasn’t sure what hers were. All her musings vanished when her phone vibrated on the counter. The screen read incoming video chat from Caleb, and she balked.

Her face was still red from her run, her hair was matted to her head from her runner’s cap, and she didn’t have any makeup on. The call stopped as she talked herself out of answering. But as soon as she set it down it started to ring again. Glancing in the embedded mirror on her closet door, she smoothed back her frizzy ponytail and hit connect.

“Good morning,” she sighed.

“I know it’s early, but I didn’t want to risk you making other plans,” Caleb said.

Her cheeks ached from smiling. “I’m new in town, remember, I don’t have any plans.”

“It looks like you already got a run in. How about a late breakfast and we can explore the city a bit?” Caleb asked.

“Okay.” A rush of excitement at spending the day with him flooded her. She stared back at his handsome face on the phone and couldn’t think of anything else to say. She was single, living in New York City, and going to spend the day with a gorgeous man that knew all her baggage.

“Great, I’ll meet you at your apartment and we can walk to that place near you with food,” Caleb’s eyes crinkled on the sides as he teased her.

“Very funny. I’m a little rusty at this.” The heat moving up her neck was disguised by her already rosy cheeks.

“It’s adorable. Get ready, I’ll see you in an hour.”

She spied the clock in her room that read 9:30, but before she could respond he hung up.

Her smile didn’t fade as she showered, anguished over which jeans to wear, and waffled between a thick sensible sweater or flowy V-neck. After blow-drying her hair, she fired off a text to Caleb.

“I’m ready.”

Caleb replied fast, “Be right there.”

It was a little after ten. She wondered if that meant he was on his way or he was close by already. Standing in front of the mirror in her room, she smoothed her simple soft white sweater that dipped low in front, paired with her favorite skinny blue jeans, and fashionable black boots. She hoped she was pulling off the casual and maybe a little sexy vibe. A moment later the intercom buzzed his arrival outside her building.

“Apartment 802,” she said, and buzzed him in.

A minute later there was a knock at her door.
