Chapter Fourteen

The Inconclusive Truth

Maggie

As the gentle rain tapped against the windows and the aroma of moist soil wafted through the air, we all congregated around the kitchen table at Yellowstone Creek Ranch. It was a summer morning filled with anticipation, yet I couldn't help but cling to the familiarity of my newfound routine: breakfast with Roy and Connor.

The kitchen was awash with the early light of daybreak, and the open windows invited in the cleansing smell of rain. It felt refreshing like it could wash away the complexities of the days before, leaving only the simplicity of this shared meal.

Roy lingered at the table, his presence a grounding force in the heart of the ranch house. Connor stood beside me at the sink, his hands moving deftly through the soapy water, washing dishes with a care that seemed to reflect the careful way he handled our delicate situation.

"I'm glad you're home, Roy," I said, my voice soft, threading through the rhythmic sound of raindrops. Roy looked up from his coffee, his eyes crinkling with the kind of contentment that only home could bring.

"Nothing like the smell of rain and fresh coffee to remind me I'm damned happy about being here," he replied, his voice carrying the timbre of a man who had weathered many storms.

Roy's eyes met his son's, the depth of experience in them reflecting on the ranch's history and the many sunrises he greeted from this very kitchen. "You've done well, Connor," he said, his tone infused with a father's pride. "Getting Carl back... it means a lot. Gives me peace, knowing we have someone like him to lean on."

Connor nodded, feeling the warmth of his approval. "I wanted to make sure you had nothing to worry about," he admitted, as a smile spread across Roy's face.

Roy's hand, steady despite the years battling Parkinson’s, patted Connor's arm. "You've more than done that, son. I can rest easy and focus on getting back in the saddle," he said, a spark of the old fire lighting his eyes.

I leaned on the cool, smooth surface of the kitchen counter, feeling a heavy wave of fatigue wash over me. Although I was less than two months pregnant, the weight of my condition slowed down my movements and heightened my senses, making me acutely aware of the life that grew within me.

Connor slid another sparkling clean plate onto the drying rack, his wink heartened me like a comforting shawl. I giggled, a silent wave of gratitude crashing over me. He always knew just how to bolster my spirits without uttering a single word. "Roy," I began, the words bubbling up from a place of joy within me, “Connor and I have news. You're going to be a grandpa again."

His hands froze around his coffee mug, a knowing grin spread across his face as he turned to us. "I had an inkling,” he teased. “There’s not much that goes on around here that I don’t know about. And, well, I’m surprised it didn’t happen a long time ago.
