Dear Nan,

I’m writing from last period at school. I’m supposed to be spending the last ten minutes of class writing a short story for language arts, but I figure writing to you counts, too.

Tate and June’s flight didn’t get canceled, the bride didn’t get cold feet, and Crystal still has to go to New Jersey tonight, so I can’t double-sleepover with her. Which means I’m definitely staying with Joe and Carlota.

I could tell Tate and June felt bad about everything, because they laid out a special breakfast this morning before school. There were donuts, scrambled eggs, bagels, and bacon, and they let me have half a cup of coffee, which I doused with sugar and cream.

Oh—the bell’s ringing. Wow, those ten minutes went quick.

Wish me luck so I don’t screw this weekend up. Because if I do, and Joe decides I’m annoying and he doesn’t like me anymore, then it’s going to be weird for the rest of my life going in and out of Tate and June’s building.

I will play it cool. As a cucumber. As a cool, not-annoying, non-bed-wetting cucumber who everyone likes.

Okay, Crystal is tugging on my arm, gotta go—
