Ultimate Opening of the Picture Surface

Changing environment and new technological standards opened a new horizon of the visible world. To encompass these broader dimensions, the painters returned to the lowest common denominator of space representation. They rediscovered the spatial forces on the picture-plane, and their laws of organization inherent in the visual perception process, conditioned by the nature of a two-dimensional picture-plane. But the creative control of these laws was identified with space itself. Pure plastic sensation was dissociated from the visible environment from which it stems. The perfection of the instrument which could produce this sensation of space became a fetish—an independent value. Spatial experience was conceived only abstractly.
