Chapter Twenty-Three
Wanting
I sat there alone in the darkness, near the door to his house. I sat there for a rather long while, thinking about everything. All Iâd done and not done, all that had happened, all the words said and not said.
The magic-users still circled and stoppedâalternately, in the way they didâbut they didnât seem to be watching me in quite the same way they had before. I analyzed my blade with my fingers, feeling the familiar imperfections caused from usage.
I rarely used my favorite knife, only enough to have caused a considerably small amount of damage to it, in comparison to some of my others. It certainly didnât throw as well as it once had, as easily, or as accurately. It was damaged, to be sure, but it was not useless. And it would always be my favorite.
I did not look directly at one of the circlers coming toward me. Not as he moved closer. Not even when he stopped and said, âYou could have killed her.â
âI would not have thrown the blade if I had no faith in my own skill,â I informed him. âIâve been throwing blades since I was a child. Iâm more than aware of what Iâm doing and the extent of my capabilities.â I wouldâve gone closer to her head if I hadnât been away from my blades for so long. Skills of that nature required consistent upkeep for you to be at your best.
I still did not look at him when he very hesitantly asked, âHow are you not afraid of her? Caliese.â
âShe is very kind,â I stated. Amongst other things.
âBut what she can do . . .â
I did look at him to say, âHas nothing at all to do with her person. Which you would know, if you knew her.â
âAre you not tempted at all?â he nearly whispered. I had no idea what he was speaking of until he gestured at the knife in my hands.
Are you not tempted at all to use that, perhaps on me?
âNot in the slightest,â I replied.
âHow can you not be?â
It took me a moment to say, âBecause I am as good as dead.â
âYouâre wearing on her last remaining patience,â I heard from the doorway beside me. âShe may appreciate you speaking to her later, but now is not the time.â
The random warlock went about his circling, then a hand appeared in front of my face. I looked up and saw him staring down at me.
Carsten, I told myself. He had a name that Iâd not wanted to use all this time.
I took his hand to allow a pull up, and then I released it immediately after standing before following him back inside.
Heâd prepared dinner, for which I was grateful, having eaten nothing since breakfast with him earlier. The two of us sat down at the table together in another awkward silence.
âIâm sorry that your fun day was ruined,â he said eventually after swallowing a bite of food.
I glanced over at him beside me and, for that moment I was looking, felt some sort of feeling flying through my torso.
