Chapter Nine

Five minutes after watching Danny’s girlfriend speed away, John placed a wakeup call to his old partner, Tommy Alexander, in the Minneapolis Police Department.

After the pleasantries, John said, “I’m going to send you a picture. Tell me if you recognize it.”

Alexander got right back to him. “It’s Russian. You got the mob on the reservation?”

John filled him in on Danny’s murder and the kidnapping.

“Sorry to hear about your girlfriend and kid.” There was silence on the other end. Alexander had dealt with a similar situation in his own life. John knew the man felt his panic and understood his helplessness.

“Listen, I know a cop in Rapid City. Name’s Sommers. He might be able to give you more insight into what’s happening there. Let me find the number and call you right back.”

Darkness lifted off the city like mist off a river. Traffic picked up. The city was coming alive for the day. He drove in search of coffee.

After ordering he took a seat in the rear of a coffee shop. When Tommy called him back he gave John the name, Waite Sommers.

“Thanks, man.”

“No problem. If there’s anything else I can do just like me know.”

When Sommers didn’t answer his cell, John left a message. He threw his paper cup in the trash and placed the call he’d been putting off.

“Iles.”

“It’s John Iron Hawk.”

“John, where are you?” His tone was controlled—too controlled.

“I’m in Rapid City.”

Silence. Then Iles’ slow cool voice asked. “What are you doing there?”

“Following a lead.”

“That lead being...?”

The coffee shop was filling up, and the chatter of the workers shouting orders made it impossible for him to hear and conduct a private conversation. He pushed through the crowd only answering Iles’ question once he was outside. “Danny Matisse’s apartment.”

Iles huffed out a loud breath. “Watanabe was going to check out the apartment later this morning.”

“Don’t bother. I met the girlfriend, but she’s hightailed it out of there.”

“Iron Hawk, you’re not on this case. I could have you arrested for inferring with a material witness and impeding an investigation.”

John stood in the corner of the coffee shop to block the wind. Trying to get his anger under control, he watched the traffic. “I couldn’t sit in my office waiting for you to inform me when it’s convenient for you. We’re talking about my child and my fiancée. And three pairs of hands are better than two.”

“You have no jurisdiction outside the reservation.”

“I know that.”

“Let Watanabe and me handle this. We’re better equipped for this kind of investigation.”

“Maybe,” John said. “But I’m more motivated. Now do you want to hear what I’ve learned?”

Iles sighed. “Yes.”

“Danny Matisse was involved with someone named Milo. No last name. He drives a big black truck—”

Iles snorted. “A big black truck. Do you know—”

“Check with Forensics,” John said, ignoring the sarcasm behind the agent’s words. “Have them put a rush on the wide treads found out at the trailer. They probably belong to the truck. If we can get a make and model, we can get the DMV to give us the names of all those vehicles tagged in the last year in this area.
