THREE MONTHS LATER

The curtain closed to enthusiastic cheers in the private screening room of Clapham Studios. This was the first full showing of the film The Untold War and most of the producers, directors, actors, and production crew were in attendance. Along the far wall of the huge room were tables with trays of food and drinks of all kinds, including champagne. People began to leave their seats and move towards the tables while talking excitedly.

“It was so good of you to invite us all,” Ginger said as she, Basil, and Felicia stood to greet Alex Simpson.

“On the contrary,” the actor said, smiling and looking confident. “It was the least I could do, considering everything you have done for me.” He cheerfully shook each of them by the hand, giving Felicia an extra moment and a wink. “Please let’s sit down and have a chat.” They settled into a row of velvet-upholstered seats. “Well, out with it. What did you think of the film?”

“Frightfully brilliant,” Felicia gushed. “You were simply dashing in that role.”

“I try to remain dashing at all times, Miss Gold, even while climbing down drainpipes in the rain.”

“A wonderful film,” Basil said. “Of course it is a bit disconcerting to relive that time, but on the other hand, it is important to remind ourselves and to think that hopefully we’ll never go to war again.”

Ginger agreed. “Very well done.” In reality, she’d been rather shaken by the film and had shed tears during certain parts. But in the end she concluded that this, indeed, was something that a good story should be able to do—have an impact on both the mind and the soul. Besides, it was nice to have Basil put his arm around her for comfort.

Keeping her focus on Mr. Simpson, she asked pointedly, “How are you?”

“Do you mean, have I had any more fugue incidents? No, thank goodness. I honestly think that the process of reliving where I was and what I did during those moments of lost memory has somehow jarred my mind into sharp focus, and I do believe, thanks to you and Miss Gold, that I won’t have to go through that again.”

“Do you know now what caused the last one?” Felicia asked.

“I think so. The last scene that we had filmed before I wandered away was the moment where I witnessed a man being killed by a German hand grenade. Well… apparently that was a bit too close to reality. In 1916 near Verdun, I watched a good friend die in the same manner.” He stared off into the distance and then shuddered. “Well, on a much brighter note, I want to introduce you to someone.” He stood and called out to an attractive lady who’d been standing near a food table chatting with several people.

“Emily? Emily, can you please come and meet someone?” The beautiful lady revealed a dazzling smile as she walked over to them. “I want you to meet my fiancée, Miss Emily Lemaire.”

Ginger glanced over at Felicia who returned her gaze with a look of mild resignation.
