Cole groaned as he slowly regained consciousness. His body was so weak that it had grown numb to the pain that caused him to pass out. He looked up through heavy lids to see that the chains around his wrists had dug all the way into his flesh and were touching his bone. He closed his eyes as helplessness consumed him.
“Welcome back” Mira said in an uncharacteristically sincere voice. “I was beginning to get worried that I was going to have to find a way out of here all by myself.”
Cole let out a tired sigh, “We aren’t getting out of here, Mira. I don’t know about you, but I know that I’m going to die here.”
“Don’t say that!” Mira growled in frustration and fear. “Don’t you dare give up! You’re closer to being rescued now than you’ve ever been. Jeremiah has to be looking for me by now. He’s going to find us.”
Cole could hear a bit of hysteria in her voice. “He might get here in time to save you, but not me. I’m too weak. I haven’t eaten in weeks. My body isn’t able to heal itself anymore. I’ve lost a lot of blood and I think infection is growing in my wounds. I’m dying, Mira” he said in a ragged breath.
“No, you’re not damn it!” Mira yelled. “You have to keep fighting. You have to fight for Lacey” she growled.
“I can’t fight anymore. I don’t have the strength to.”
Mira began to panic. “Then you have to find the strength to fight. Think of Lacey and how hard she’s been searching for you” she said.
Mira had never been a fan of Cole’s but at the moment she felt a connection to him and she didn’t want to lose it. Whether it was because they were both trapped with no way of getting back to their loved ones or because she was actually starting to like him as a friend, she didn’t know or care. She just didn’t want to be left alone.
Cole didn’t say anything. Mira cocked her head to the side and focused on trying to hear his heartbeat. She could hear it, but it was faint. She called out to him but he still didn’t respond. Her panic was quickly turning into anger. “Damn you, Cole! Answer me!” She knew that she had to keep him talking.
“What?” Cole’s voice was merely a whisper.
Mira let out a relieved breath. “You need to stay with me now. Talk…don’t close your eyes, okay?”
“What do you want to talk about?”
Mira racked her brain for something to say but she came up empty. “Um, I don’t know. Just ask me something. Anything.”
Cole was once again silent as he thought. “Alright. Earlier you admitted that you didn’t like Lacey because you knew she was stronger than you. So what’s your excuse for the way you’ve mistreated Maggie all these years. And don’t say it’s because she’s stronger than you too, because we both know that’s not true.” His words were weak and drawn out.
