Chapter Seventeen

“I need a new plan, one that does like it should”

The rest of the hoods had started to come around, and we let them this time. Stevie tied them up with her inexhaustible supply of zip ties, and they were all reasonably docile. I wasn’t sure if it was because Jess had convinced them of our good intentions (i.e. we want to kill Evelyn too, let’s work together) or if she just used the Force. In any case, they didn’t fight the move.

I asked the first question that came into my head, “Jess, can you make it so we can understand what they’re saying?”

“I can, but I can’t guarantee it’ll work.”

“Why?”

She looked at me like I had rocks in my head. “Because I can’t guarantee anything. I’ll try, but until I set it up I won’t know for sure if it works. See?”

“Uh. Ok.”

“We could also just see if we can get Jean to make us a conference call, but I doubt you want to lean on her too much.” She was shaking her head ‘no’ the whole time she was saying it.

I said, “No, that’s ok. Just a translator would be nice. Meanwhile, I guess you can help us by doing some translating, eh?”

“Sure. It’s not like I have anything else to do.”

I wasn’t sure if she was being sarcastic or not, but I didn’t really think she had anything else to do, so it was a tossup.

We went over to our hoods and I asked them if any of them knew any English.

Jess went into a flurry of whatever language she was speaking. One of them spoke up and said, “Faah-queue.”

I looked at Jess.

She smirked. “She thinks she’s saying good morning, or something. Apparently, they ran into someone that thought it would be funny.”

I shook my head. “Well, tell her it’s not funny. Well, I mean it is, kind of. But not helpful.”

I had a thought and pulled off my pants and shirt and pointed at my scars on my leg, chest, arms and so on. I said “Evelyn.”

After the initial whistles from the guys, they understood what I was doing. One of them pulled off his shirt and showed a truly nasty set of burn scars all the way across his chest. He said, “Evelyn.” Everyone nodded somberly. Evidently, they were very familiar with Evelyn.

I put my clothes back on and sat down with them. I figured at this point we were probably ok, and I clipped the zip ties off them. It was a calculated risk, but I thought it was worth it. Plus, I know Stevie and Jess both have reflexes like - well, they make mine look sick. And I took the guns. And the fanny packs.

They all stretched and rubbed their hands and arms. One of them smiled and said something to me. Jess said that he was saying, “Thanks.”

I called for pizza and caught them before they closed. About twenty minutes later, we all sat down inside the RV and broke bread.
