If someone were to ask you what the best thing you can do to ensure your Labradoodle’s long-term health and wellness was, how would you answer them? Before I became a dog owner myself, I probably would have said something about vaccinations or regular vet check-ups – the thought of dog food wouldn’t have even entered my mind. What I have learned (from personal experience, unfortunately) however, is that buying your dog a high-quality dog food is absolutely the best thing you can do to make sure that he stays healthy. Let me tell you how I know this to be true.

After I had picked out my first Labradoodle puppy, Sandy, from the breeder, I stopped at the pet store on my way home to stock up on supplies. When I got to the pet store, I headed straight for the dog food section and quickly realized that there were more options than I had anticipated. I spent a few minutes poking around then I grabbed something with a picture of a happy dog on it and headed for the checkout.

When I finally got to bring my Sandy home, I started feeding him the food I had purchased. He grew like a weed for the first couple of weeks and by the time he was six months old he was probably ten times the size he was when I’d gotten him. I could be exaggerating a little bit, but the important thing is that he had grown – fast. As Sandy grew to adulthood, I made sure he had all of his vaccinations and always took him to the vet on time. But I started to notice some problems. Sandy wasn’t as active and energetic as I had heard Labradoodles should be and he was starting to have digestive problems as well.

When I took him to the vet, the first question he asked was, “what are you feeding him?” I am a little embarrassed to admit that I only knew the brand name of the dog food I had chosen – I couldn’t have told you what was in it at the time. What the vet said to me, however, had me rushing home to read the label on the package. What I found was a whole bunch of ingredients that I didn’t even know existed – things like corn gluten meal and poultry by-product meal. It soon became very clear to me that what I was feeding Sandy was little better than garbage.

At that point, I knew that I had to make a change or Sandy was going to keep suffering for my mistakes. So, I buckled down and did the research to learn more about my dog’s nutritional needs – I also learned how to read a pet food label so I would know a quality product when I saw it. It took a few days of hard research but eventually I felt confident enough to head back to the pet store.

I arrived with several brand names in mind and walked up and down the aisles until I found them.
