Chapter 39

“She’s gone.”

He was panting agitatedly into the phone as he spoke. It made him hard to understand.

“Who is? Linda? Because I think we….”

“No,” Sheriff Dawson interrupted me. “Not Linda. Clarissa.”

I shot up in the bed, suddenly wide awake.

“What?”

“Clarissa is missing. They called me tonight from the hospital. Apparently, she left there sometimes this afternoon. They’ve searched for her everywhere, at the hospital and in the surrounding area, but surveillance cameras captured her leaving through the back entrance, and then we believe she stole a car. Someone reported their gray Honda minivan stolen. We got the tags for the stolen car and have put out an alert, but so far have gotten nothing.”

I stared at the wall in front of me inside my hotel room. There was a painting of a big willow tree in a field somewhere in a glass frame.

“H-how is this possible? I don’t understand this at all. Didn’t you have a guard by her door?”

“We don’t know how she got past him. He said he was on his phone, and she might have snuck out, or maybe it happened when he was in the restroom or down for coffee. He doesn’t know how long she was gone before he realized it, but the surveillance camera captured her by the back door at three o’clock, and the hospital didn’t realize she was gone until five when a nurse entered her room to take some blood tests.”

I closed my eyes. “Wow. That’s bad. That’s really bad. She could have been kidnapped again, for all we know.”

Dawson went quiet at the other end. I could feel his embarrassment through the phone.

“Could the kidnapper have come back for her?” Dawson asked. “Would that be a behavior fitting with his profile?”

I bit my lip while a million thoughts rushed through my head. The kidnapper might be interested in silencing her. That would be his motive.

“But you said she was alone on the surveillance video, right?” I asked. “She left the hospital on her own.”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t stop thinking about Steve Melton, Jr. Something wasn’t right about him and what he had told us.

“I have a feeling she’s coming here,” I said.

“To DC?”

I nodded. “Yes. I have a feeling Steve Melton, Jr. hasn’t told us everything he knows.”

“I…I’m not sure I understand,” Dawson said.

“It’s okay,” I said. “You don’t have to.”

I hung up, then dialed Walsh’s number. “What’s your go-to food for stakeouts?”

She laughed lightly. “Coffee.”

“That’s it? Coffee? We can never be friends.”

“What’s yours?” she asked.

“M&M’s. Lots of them.”

“Okay, I’ll pick some up when I get my coffee on the way. I take it you want me to pick you up at the hotel?”

“You’re thinking correctly. Make it two bags. It might be a long night.”

“I rarely sleep anyway,” she said.

“Me either. Maybe we can be friends after all.”

“At least you’ll have the M&Ms to yourself.”

“Good point.”
