CHAPTER TWELVE

They timed Fiona’s Anglo Saxons. Fifteen minutes apart. There was some relief all round at this news. A tiny glimmer of hope, even, that Randy Mair would clear the way to the main road in time for the ambulance to whisk her off to hospital.

‘Although at this rate,’ Jim declared, ‘It’s going to be a pretty packed ambulance. Fiona’s baby, Gordon’s nose and Hamish’s head. We’re dropping like flies!’

Penny slapped herself on the forehead and said, ‘Which reminds me, we need to start searching for Raine. In all the excitement, I completely forgot. Mrs Hubbard, have Sandra Next Door and Eileen organised everyone into search parties yet?’

‘Yes, dearie, and I have some good news on that front. Mrs Goggins gave us some walkie talkies that the castle staff normally use.’

With a small flourish, Mrs Hubbard pulled a radio from her pocket and handed it to Fiona.

‘That’s brilliant!’ Penny exclaimed, delighted that things were finally going their way. ‘It’ll speed up the search. We need to leave Gordon with Fiona and someone with the children, then everyone else can split into pairs. Jack, are you going back upstairs to Noel?’

‘I suppose so. I like the excitement down here, but I better go and back him up. He’s not good in the dark on his own.’

‘We could go down to the kitchen and get you some candles and a radio so you can keep in touch with us.’

‘I don’t think the candles will help,’ said Jack. ‘Unless you were planning a séance.’

‘No, I mean candles for light. Radios for keeping in touch.’

Jack smiled and said, ‘I was joking.’

‘I’m not,’ Penny told him. ‘Keep in touch. There’s a thief and a murderer among us, and you need to be on your guard.’

Jim said, ‘We all need to be on our guard. Right, one down, two to go. Let’s rescue Raine and Cara.’

Leaving Gordon to tend to Fiona, they made their way down to the kitchen, where Sandra Next Door and Eileen hovered by the stairs, anxiously awaiting news of Fiona and the Christmas Star.

‘She has a way to go yet,’ Penny told them, ‘and the Christmas Star is gone. But the good news is that Randy Mair has gone to clear a path down to the main road so that we can get out of here. Have you organised everyone?

Eileen nodded and said, ‘Myself and Mrs Hubbard will start searching from the top then work our way down. Sandra Next Door will take the first and second floors with Mrs Goggins, you and Jim take the secret passageways and Mrs Snipples said she’d go with Cameron around the ground floor.’

‘Cameron!’ exclaimed Jim. ‘Shouldn’t we leave him behind with the other kids and Mr Black?’

‘He’s very insistent,’ said Sandra Next Door, giving Cameron an approving look. ‘I like a young man who knows his own mind. The ground floor is safest, and he’ll be with his teacher.’

Reluctantly, Penny agreed, although she privately wondered if Cameron would do a better job of staying to look after the children than Mr Black.
