Handgun Disarms
DEFENSES AGAINST ArMED ATTACKErS
rCAT...Steps for defending against any weapon
Redirect: get the dangerous part of the weapon offline.
Control: control the weapon so that the attacker cannot put it back into action against you. Attack : attack your assailant using combatives so that they are unable to use the weapon. This is particularly effective because the attacker’s focus is almost always on the weapon. They will be so concerned with getting the weapon back; they will not defend the combatives you are delivering.
Takeaway: if the barrage of combatives is not effective at releasing the weapon from the attacker’s hand, take it away using leverage against the weakest part of his grip.
HANDGuN FroM THE FroNT, SoMETIMES CALLED “CuPPING”
Whether your hands are up or down (usually up in reality) this first move must be made with no motion except for your hand going to the weapon. No big body moves, foot shuffle, bend at the waist, etc. 1. Take your right hand directly to the weapon in the shortest route possible. You are not grabbing the handgun. If you attempt to grab there is not much miss room. Use an open hand aiming the webbing of the thumb to the trigger guard (fig. 1). This gives you about a seven inch surface to redirect the weapon with. As soon as the weapon is touched redirect it off of your body and wrap your hand around the barrel to control it. During the redirection keep the handgun on the same plane to ensure the weapon clears your body in a straight line and the shortest route possible, in other words, if the handgun is at neck level when aimed it is still at neck level after it has been redirected. Include a slight body turn at this same time. Do not stay squared up but let your right shoulder turn towards the attacker. This blades our body a bit making our torso a smaller target and gets the weapon off quicker and also has your momentum falling towards the gunman if the defense fails. You will be in a much better position to attack and control the weapon than if your body was falling away from the gunman.
2. Next, send your left hand to the hammer of the weapon and wrap the hammer (fig. 2) as you step in with your left foot to deliver a knee or front kick to the groin with the right leg (fig. 3). As the kicking leg is going back to the ground snap the handgun to your waist. Press the right forearm tightly against your stomach and the left forearm against your side and snap and twist the barrel of the handgun up and towards the attacker (fig. 4).
3. Once his grip is broken, pull the handgun away with force. Use your whole body (not just arms) to strike the barrel of the gun to the attackers face or head (fig. 5) and back off at an angle looking to escape. If he rushes you before you
