“What is she doing here?” Ruthie hissed, cutting a harsh glance to where Susan sat in a corner to watch the day’s filming.

“She wants a story. Try to ignore her.”

“Hard to do when the whole room reeks of her whorehouse perfume.”

I sniffed. “I think that’s you.” I gave her a consoling pat on the shoulder and took my place on set. My gaze flicked to Louie. Once again, my director was a murder suspect. What did that say about my job choice?

“Focus, Canyon.”

I jerked at his sharp command, then relaxed when I discovered his bark had been aimed at Ruthie who kept sniffing her armpits.

“Something wrong?” Louie’s sarcastic tone cut through the room. “Somebody get this woman some deodorant!”

“I don’t need any, thank you very much.” Ruthie curled her lip and took her place behind the metal desk. “I’m ready. Do you like apricots?”

“That’s not in the script.” Louie flipped through the sheets of paper on his clipboard.

I palmed my forehead.

“I’m asking you a question,” Ruthie said. “Not speaking my lines.”

“Yes, I like them. Why?” He narrowed his eyes.

“What do you do with the pits?”

“Throw them away.” He glanced at me. “What is wrong with her today?”

I shrugged. “I think she’s getting senile.”

“Take that back!” Ruthie bolted to her feet.

“Okay, she’s awake now.” I grinned and took my place behind the desk assigned to my character.

The room grew silent, then work resumed when no explosion came from Ruthie. The glare sent my way let me know we’d discuss my behavior later.

Ruthie didn’t let me down. She chased after me all the way to the cafeteria when we took a lunch break. “Mind explaining your rude comment?”

“Would you mind telling me why you were baiting a suspect?”

“I’m trying to find out if he’s capable of murder.” She crossed her arms. “I can’t work for someone who is, Kelly. It’s outside my principles.”

“Good grief, Grandma. Louie didn’t kill anyone. Why would he?”

“He’s on the list. He didn’t like Robert. That’s two reasons.”

I laughed. “Nobody seems fond of Robert. That doesn’t make them all killers. I’m going to focus on the women in his life.”

“Can I put that in the paper?” Susan rushed toward us. “That doesn’t give away too much information. I’ll even say the police are looking at the women in his life to draw attention away from you.”

“Don’t mention any names. Now, if you two will give me some peace, I have a lunch date with Hollywood’s most gorgeous.”

“Lance Cruz?” Susan’s eyes widened.

I frowned. “No, Brock.” I hadn’t met Lance yet, but his publicity photos showed an extremely handsome young man with dark blond hair and brooding hazel eyes. Still, nothing compared to Brock’s dark hair and blue eyes. At least, not in my opinion.

I entered the cafeteria and scanned the room for Brock. Speak of the devil. Lance sat next to him. With a shrug, and ignoring the looks of young hopefuls around us, I joined the two leading men.

Brock stood. “Sweetheart, have you met Lance?”

“Not yet.” I shook his hand.
