An hour later, I was busy putting Cookie to bed while Mike took Spike for a walk. I enjoyed our mommy and baby time together and looked forward to it every night. Cookie liked to hold the soft cloth book covers between her chubby hands while I read aloud. Tonight, she zonked out on the second page. I felt much the same way. Dinner at my parents' house was always exhausting.

When Mike and Spike returned, I changed into my nightgown, turned the air conditioner off, and opened the bedroom window. It was finally a bit cooler outside, and I loved to sleep with the windows open during the summertime. Spike settled across my feet while Mike went to brush his teeth. He emerged from the bathroom wearing a pair of plaid boxers that made him look incredibly sexy. Then again, Mike could be wearing a paper bag and still look sexy.

He grabbed the remote off the nightstand and flicked the television on. I leaned over and rested my hand on his arm.

"Can we please talk?"

Mike sighed as he muted the volume then folded his hands under his head. "Shoot."

"Are you angry that I went to Brian's house today?"

His jaw tightened, but he shook his head. "You know that I trust you."

"Then what's the problem?" I asked.

"I said that I trusted you, Sal. I didn't say that I trusted him."

I stifled a groan. "You're kidding, right? I thought we were over this."

Mike wrapped his arms around my shoulders, pulling me close. "I'm sorry, princess. I don't mean to be a jerk. For the record, I feel sorry for Brian. Ally's left him, his ex was murdered, and he's on suspension from his job. But I don't want him pulling you down with him. If this keeps up, he's going to have you wallowing knee deep in his problems."

"But you said it was up to me—"

He held up a finger. "You're right, I did say that. And I'll admit, I was pissed off when Nicoletta opened her big mouth at dinner. While I was walking Spike, I had some time to think. It is up to you, but at the same time, I'm still worried about your safety."

I leaned my head against his bare chest. "I appreciate that but put yourself in my shoes. What would you do if the situation were reversed? Say there was a friend of yours that had saved your life in the past. Then suddenly, she needed your help. Would you walk away from her?"

"No," he admitted. "That wouldn't be right. I'd do the same as you."

"Thank you." I snuggled closer to him, loving the smell of his spicy cologne. "Don't worry. I'd like to talk to Felicia, but I don't see what else I can do to help. And I didn't go looking for Evan, remember. He was the one who called me."

"See, that's my point," Mike said. "Somehow, everyone already knows you're involved. How does that happen? Is there some type of emergency
