CHAPTER NINE

Maggie had officially become a pro with the espresso machine, and it was not a minute too soon. With only two more days until Christmas, the main street was bustling. Francis and Elmer came up to the counter for their usual refills. Elmer was wearing a Santa Claus hat. Francis, reindeer horns.

“Are you sure you can’t spare a few extra cookies for us to take home?” Francis asked. “Our grandson is arriving tonight, and I know he’d just love them.”

I cringed. The case had already been nearly cleared out. Elliot was baking tirelessly just to keep up with demand. If we survived until next Christmas, I would be hiring extra help so I could just stay in the kitchen with him. “I’ll see what I can do. But no promises.”

Both of them grinning, they paid for their refills, which Maggie made for them.

She swiped a palm across her brow as they shuffled away with their drinks. She had tied her hair back in two buns on top of her head. “When did you say Richie was coming in again?”

I leaned against the counter, exhausted. “Not until noon. We’ll have to help him during lunch, but then we can head out to Baybridge.” I checked the clock on the wall. “My mom should be here soon.”

According to Damon, the runes on Maggie’s grandmother’s floor were protection runes, likely scrawled by the witch herself. She had known she was in danger. After I had caught my mom up on everything, she had agreed to go with us to attempt contacting Maggie’s grandmother. And to see Nicholas. I was beginning to think he had cast some magic of his own with how much everyone liked him. Or maybe he was just a nice guy. Imagine that.

I turned as the next customers came up to the counter, spotting Elliot out the window with the next tray of baked goods. “Can you go help him?” I asked Maggie without looking back.

She hurried away without a word as I helped the next customers.

Spooky watched me from his bookshelf. You shouldn’t have let Evie take so many days off.

I could barely think straight enough to answer him. She always visits her mom during Christmas. I can’t just say no. And it’s never been a problem before.

Yes, but now you have me to bolster your magic. You should have thought ahead.

I smirked as I handed my customers their change. You’re just bitter because I haven’t baked you any cat treats yet.

Yes, there is that.

I glanced out the window as I started preparing the next order, wondering what was taking Maggie and Elliot so long. He was still holding his tray, and she was showing him her phone. I frowned as the espresso brewed. I hoped it wasn’t more bad news. My mom arrived while they were still outside, and all three of them proceeded to look at whatever was on Maggie’s phone.

Shaking my head, I turned back to my work. I would find out soon enough.

Despite my thoughts, my shoulders only relaxed once they finally stepped inside.
