Twenty-Five
Disaster averted.
Ethan tucked his sister into bed while Avital watched from the doorway. Kaylaâs Lippmann boxes had been restored to their rightful place at the side of the room, and heâd placed a sign on the wall above them that read Do Not Throw Out in big block letters. Pulling up her covers, Ethan kissed her good-night. Then, shutting off the light, he met Avital on the threshold.
âI guess we should go somewhere to talk,â he said.
âIs there somewhere we can go to get cleaned up first?â Avital asked, glancing down at her skirt. âIâm kind of worried about getting a urinary tract infection.â
Ethan paused before answering. âThereâs a place nearby. Weâd have to be quiet...but we can get cleaned up, get you a change of clothes.â
Avital nodded, and returning to the car, they took off. Twenty minutes later, they were parked at the end of the driveway, the Lippmann estate looming in the dark beyond.
âThis is where you live?â Avital asked.
âUnfortunately,â Ethan grumbled.
âI knew the Lippmanns had money, but this isââ
âGrotesque?â He filled in the blanks for her. âMonstrous? Indecent?â
âI was leaning more toward incredible, but sure...weâll go with your interpretation.â
Ethan sighed. âI guess we should go inside, then,â Ethan said, stepping out of the car first. Avital quickly followed. âJust remember what I said,â he explained one more time, leading her down the driveway. âFollow me. Try not to make too much noise. If my grandfather finds out youâre in his house...â
âTrust me,â Avital said. âI know eccentric grandfathers better than anybody.â
Taking her by the hand, he led her inside. Luckily, it was past ten oâclock. The house was quiet. The majority of the staff had gone to bed. Holding her in his grip, he moved briskly but silently.
âCome on.â Ethan nodded toward the stairs. âMy room is in the back wing.â
âThe back wing?â Avital mouthed.
His hearing was on high alert as he went, and he felt every ounce of danger as he led her up the stairs. Finally, he made it to his room. Checking the hallway once more for interlopers, he closed the door behind her.
âYou okay?â Ethan asked, meeting her eyes directly.
âIâm fine, Ethan.â
âYou sure?â
âYeah.â She didnât seem to understand why he was so nervous. âWhere are we?â
âThis is my room,â he said.
Avital blinked. âThis is your room?â
Her eyes scanned the space once more. He could see she was confused. Ethan didnât have time to explain. Quickly, he turned on the light to a bathroom before heading over to one of the lower drawers of his bureau, pulling out a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
âHere you go,â he said, handing them to her. âYou can take a shower in there. There are towels and toiletries in the linen closets.â
âWhat should I do with my dirty clothes?â
Ethan did a quick once-over of the room and then grabbed a liner from a hidden wastebasket in the wall. âHere,â he said, leading her to the shower. âJust hurry up, okay?â
âEthan,â Avital said in a whisper. âI canât wear these.
