At the Cross Bones graveyard he couldn’t tell which grave was Tom’s, and he wandered through the overgrown grass and weeds on the path that soaked his legs, looking for some sign to help him. A memory of his dream murmured in his thoughts; his father’s image and the surge of love within the blessing he had given. A sense of the connection ripened, his father’s spirit hovering close. Most of the mounds were unmarked – this was the resting place of the unloved and unwanted, the sinners of the world who were denied a Christian burial. Here and there a rough-hewn cross stood sentinel over a grave, and on one someone had planted rosemary. He ran his fingers along the leaves, inhaling the scent that lingered.

What would his mother have planted? he wondered. What herb to mark the passing of her cousin-lover? He scanned the graves a second time. By the wall was a yew tree, dark leaves and bright berries, and he made his way towards it. It seemed a fitting marker for a witch’s grave, the tree that was sacred to Hecate, a gateway to the underworld. Was this where his father’s body lay? Perhaps. But it was close enough, and he sat at the graveside on the untended grass, the damp soaking through his breeches once again, barely noticed.

He could think of nothing to say. He had thought he would pour out his heart to this man he had never met whose blood he shared – of all the souls in the world, he knew that Tom would understand. But no words came, so he sat in silence instead, and though he grew cold in the haze of rain, he was content simply to be in his father’s company, drawing strength from the connection.
