I sucked in deep lungfuls of air when the land spit us back out. A shudder ripped down my spine as the feeling of being inside a rock pulsed in my veins.

“Never again,” I panted to Quake, scrambling out of his arms and then crashing to my knees. “Never again.”

“Alright.” He stepped back, giving me space while his hands lifted as if in surrender. He was totally naked (except for the fireproof, magical fingerless gloves all fae wore constantly, me included), and ridiculously sexy. It took a crazy amount of effort to stop myself from staring at him.

The silence between us was heavy as I caught my breath.

Finally, I lifted my head and looked around.

We were in an apartment-sized underground cavern. A large river flowed rapidly off to my left, and above it, there was no wall or other barrier.

To my right, there was a small kitchen, and a door that looked like it might lead into a bathroom. Near the kitchen, there was a thick mattress with soft-looking blankets.

I was exhausted.

It felt like I hadn’t slept in days.

But I was still on fire, so the mattress wasn’t an option.

“Are you hungry?” Quake asked me, still naked.

Odin.

Quake.

I had to decide what I was going to call him. It felt like a lie to keep up with the Quake thing when I knew his name, even though the irony of said name didn’t pass my notice.

“No.” My answer was sharper than I intended.

Like always.

I wasn’t trying to be cruel, I was just…

Struggling.

Always struggling.

And now, I was struggling while also on fire.

That was just my damn luck.

I did feel better, now that I had magic, though. It felt like the fire had burned away some of my fear, which was good. Really, really good.

Hell, it was probably necessary, because I’d been scared out of my mind for the past few months.

“You were in the fire for three days, Margo. You must be hungry.” His voice was low and soft again.

Like always.

He was kind.

And I was a bitch.

I hated that it was our thing.

And… three days?

That was even longer than I thought.

I shoved a hand through my hair. It felt awful; caked in soot and ash.

At least it hadn’t burned off, I supposed.

“I don’t know, okay?” My voice was too harsh in my ears.

But I didn’t know how to soften it. Didn’t know if I even wanted to, either.

“I don’t know,” I said again. The flames on my skin were growing.

“You can’t let the fire control you,” Quake said in a low, calm voice. “If you listen to it, it will only grow larger and more difficult to reign in.”

I squeezed my eyes closed. “Then how do I stop it?”

“Think of something else. Whatever you focused on when you escaped its power earlier—focus on that.”

My face heated. “Helpful.”

“I’m not your enemy, Margo.”

He was no longer calling me Velvet.

I’d gotten my wish, I supposed—even if it hurt like hell.

“You’re not my friend, either,” I retorted.

He was silent for a long moment, before he finally said.
