Chapter 31
My motion sickness has improved enough that I can keep down small bits of food. I still take the mint and other herbs the Nightmares carry to keep the worst of it at bay. They find humor in it. As does the stupid bird. Among the rest of easy conversation we have, being a source of humor for them and Jakir passes the time. Ares wisely stays out of the way, only helping when necessary. I feel his eyes on me as if a searing brand is constantly being hovered over every part of my body. That heat moves across me in languid licks so tempting I nearly reach for him. No matter how badly I want to meet his gaze when I in turn drag my eyes across his body, I refrain. Distrust still festers at the memories of looking at him. The same face Iâd stared at while my body was broken over and over again.
He speaks the first time since Iâd stared down the dock at the sound of thunder.
âWe need to follow this path,â he points on the map.
âThatâs right along where you said his city sits,â Jakir frowns.
âIt is, but during storms like this he puts his forces elsewhere.â
âWhy?â Senka stands on her tiptoes to look over my shoulder.
âBecause most wouldnât have the ability to go that direction,â he pulls back, staring at me. âNot without a dragon that can hide at night while pulling us through those waters.â
They all turn to stare at me. I roll my eyes, running both my hands through my hair and tugging on it.
âNot now,â Ares unfolds himself to stand at his full height. âTonight. This storm will curve around us, all weâll get is some rocky waves.â
âYouâre sure?â Jakir looks out over the water.
âYouâre really going to ask that and simply trust him?â I hold out a hand to gesture towards Ares. âJust like that and suddenly youâre fine with listening to him?â
Jakir looks at me calmly, picking up the seeds of nervousness, frustration, and remaining distrust in the Bond. I stare him down as he soothes the fraying edges that had started to drag my mind down in the days of traveling over the water. Through his eyes and our connection he eases the knot of tension in my stomach into complete relaxation. I let out a heavy sigh, moving to sit on the raised platform at the bow.
âYou should get some sleep,â Jakir calls after me. His warning pulses at the base of my spine. Feathers lands on him for a moment, taking the treat offered to him. He swallows it before fling back up to his post at the highest part of the mast.
I stop, only turning to glare at him and Ares before moving below deck into the single bed. My body feels heavy, an invisible weight pressing on every inch of skin since weâd come within range of the southeastern continent. It wasnât visible yet, but Ares and the Nightmares tracking told us otherwise.
