Chapter 11

As I pulled back the hood, a blonde head of hair revealed itself. The once cloaked person struggled against my grip, and so I planted my other hand on their shoulder to make sure they weren’t able to escape my grasp.

Our captive turned away from me and towards Edel, whose face was still puffy from sleep, but a look of surprise crossed her face as she looked at my prisoner. But Edel quickly shook it off and disappeared into her room. She reappeared with a set of handcuffs which she quickly snapped onto each wrist.

“Let me go!” the woman shouted at both of us.

Edel held her while I stepped around to the front so I finally could see who it was. As I rounded on her, I couldn’t help the gasp that escaped my mouth. I looked up for a moment to try and get my thoughts together and saw Celia poke her head over the edge of the desk. I gave the receptionist a quick thumbs up, and then I looked back down at the young woman in front of me, who was still swathed in the black cloak.

It was the usher from the Upper Circle at the theatre, the one who seemed more interested in her phone than the murder, and the one who had told us she had felt a ghostly presence. I couldn’t believe I had overlooked her so easily but it was because she just didn’t seem the sort of type that would be capable of committing vicious murders like Joanna and John’s. It appeared that in this case, looks were deceiving.

She glared up at me with a thunderous look in her eyes and proceeded to spit on one of my shoes. Edel looked like she wanted to punch the woman, but I chose not to give the surly youngster the satisfaction of a reaction.

Instead, I walked over to the reception desk and leaned over it to speak to Celia.

“You can come out now,” I told her. “We’ve got her.”

“O-okay,” she said in a shaky voice. “You found the tunnel, then?”

“Aye,” I replied. “I won’t tell your manager if you don’t.”

“Deal,” she chuckled.

Celia was a nice enough girl, but after discovering that the usher was beneath the cloak, I wasn’t sure if I could trust anyone anymore. The usher had put on such a good show at the theatre, which was fitting, to be fair to her, that neither Edel nor I had given her a second thought.

“Could I grab a couple of tissues, please?” I asked and pointed at the tissue box by her computer.

“Sure,” she said and held the box up for me so that I could take a couple of sheets.

“Cheers,” I replied.

I walked past Edel and the usher to the dagger, and with the help of the tissues, I picked it up carefully at the tips. I studied it for a moment, then I wrapped it in a few more tissues so I could hold it more comfortably without leaving prints.
