Chapter 6

The Twist

Rebecca woke to the sound of her front door closing and the bed shaking as two cats leapt from their sleeping spots. She was startled but kept her wits about her, checking the time on her phone.

“Three? How is it three in the morning?”

She realized quickly that a door shutting downstairs did not guarantee it was Kenny. She swung her legs from the bed and silently padded across the bedroom, checking for signs it was him from the top of the stairs.

“Bean, what are you doing up at this time of the morning? Hey, Joey.”

It was clearly Kenny’s voice, so she made her way down the stairs.

“That’s quite the wake-up alarm. Nearly scared me to death when I figured out what was going on.” She eyed him from head to toe from the second step. “Why are you still in your uniform at this time, and when did you change into it?” Rebecca’s head was clear enough to notice he wasn’t wearing the clothes from after the game anymore.

“We had a second death tonight. I changed before I responded to the call. Thought about going home after, but, honestly, I didn’t want to be alone. I’m sorry I woke you. The door kinda got stuck on the mat, and I didn’t want the cats to get out.”

“Another one? Who? Are they connected? How…”

“Rebecca,” Kenny soothed. “We don’t know most of that yet, but it was a man who had recently moved to Bristol. I wouldn’t assume you’ve met him. His name is Ernie. Lives on Union Street. Neighbors called in a noise complaint because his dog was outside barking for hours.” Kenny was removing his uniform shirt and pants and folding them neatly in a pile on the floor. “When we got there, a car was in the driveway, but no one answered. We made a forced entry based on the neighbor’s statement that he had returned home earlier. When we got in, we found him deceased on the kitchen floor.”

“Any sign of a struggle or how he died?”

“Nothing. He’d been dead for a bit, though. Body stiff, even in this heat. No way of telling what happened until the medical examiner gets us more information.”

Rebecca hugged Kenny, using the stairs to even their height. “I’m so sorry you’ve been dealing with this. I know I couldn’t, but I wish I could have been there to support you.”

“You’re right. There’s nothing you could have done, but I appreciate the thought. Now, I’m going to tell you something, as long as you don’t go jumping to conclusions or harassing the volunteers tomorrow.”

She may have thought about crossing her fingers behind her back but refrained. If she broke her promise to her fiancée, she’d have to deal with the consequences. “I promise, no harassing.”

“We have reason to believe he was at the Lobster & Chicken Dinner because he had one of the takeout boxes like the ones you got lobsters in.”

“But why would he have a takeout box if he attended? What was in the box?”

“From a quick glance, it appeared he had the chicken.
