Chapter Fifteen

Glen Ellyn Police Detective Rick Phillips stared at CC. He nodded politely as she spoke. She could tell he was only half-listening. CC gave her theory about the caramel on the shaft. When they were done, the detective smiled and opened a file folder sitting in front of him on his desk. “It’s a very interesting story. And how did you get into the store, ma’am?”

Anne and CC looked at each other. Before they could answer, Phillips closed the file. “Her death is under investigation. Thank you for coming in.”

“That’s it?” CC asked. “That’s all you’re going to say?”

He smiled. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”

“Do you know who we are?” Anne asked.

The police detective said, “Yes, I’m aware of your blog.”

“Then why won’t you believe us?”

“Miss Hillstrom, the Glen Ellyn police prefer to conduct their own investigations. As much as we appreciate private citizens sticking their noses into our business, breaking into private buildings is a crime. I suggest you leave the investigation to the police and mind your own store. I think we’re done here.”

Anne stood up in a huff. She stormed out followed by CC. “Of all the––. I can’t believe it.”

“Maybe he’s right. Maybe we’ve overstepped our boundaries,” CC said. “It’s just that I have a hard time letting things go.”

“Are you doubting yourself now? Do you think it’s possible that it was an accident?” Anne asked.

CC had nothing to say. The girls walked the few blocks to their small storefront. They stood inside, surveying the devastation that Betsy had caused. Ingrid was sweeping up the shards of glass, crystal and china. “What did the police say?” Ingrid asked.

“They didn’t believe us,” Anne said. She flopped down on the ornate gold and red velvet couch that hadn’t been sold yet, rubbing her hands on the plush velvet. “I can’t believe I’m letting Buttersworth have this.”

“Ms. Buttersworth called. She made arrangements for movers to pick everything up tomorrow,” Ingrid said.

“At least you made enough money to hold you over until the bank straightens things out,” CC said.

Anne counted the money in her head. There was a pink Limoges plate she’d been watching on eBay. It was time to rebuild her empire. That would be her first purchase before she paid her mortgage. She needed to fill the void that Buttersworth was leaving in her wake. She needed to feel good about herself again. She had lost everything. Her money, her antiques, Nigel.

Ingrid sat down next to Anne, putting her arm around her. “I know you’re going to miss all these wonderful things. It must have been so hard for you to sell them. Caitlin told me about an indoor flea market at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. Perhaps we can go there and you can continue teaching me?”

A small smile grew on Anne’s face. Ingrid watered it. She nudged her, giving her an encouraging look. The smile grew larger. CC came over. “What are you two talking about?”

“Nothing.” Anne replied.

When CC had gone into the back room, Anne said, “Let’s keep this between you and me.
