Chapter 4
I was sitting up in bed, clutching Spunky and waiting for the police to arrive. I could still hear muffled bumps and clatters from downstairs. It sounded like someone was searching through my kitchen cupboards. I almost laughed at the stupidity of criminals—what were they going to steal? My blender?
Finally, I heard the police arrive, with no sirens. I had asked for that, hoping to catch the robber in the act. I got out of bed and pried Spunky’s claws out of my chest.
“It’s ok, boy,” I said as he hid under the bed. “We’re safe now.”
I don’t think he believed me, because he stayed there while I put on my robe and headed down to meet the police I could hear taking charge downstairs.
Luckily for me, Anderson had been working late and joined the raid. He saw me coming down the stairs and said, “Well Greg, look who’s dropped in for a visit.”
He pulled a handcuffed figure into view. I gasped in astonishment—it was Maxwell from the support group!
“Hell, Maxwell,” I said, “If you wanted something of mine, why didn’t you just ask for it, instead of breaking in and scaring me half to death?”
“Then give me the cassava,” Maxwell grunted. “I know you have it.”
“No, I don’t—I told you that,” I turned from him to Anderson. They both had the same skeptical look on their face. I could feel my panic rising. “Wait! Do you guys both think I’m the murderer? That flour went missing, I tell you!”
I pointed at Maxwell and said: “It went missing on a night when you were here, and right after Betty threatened to spill the beans about you.”
I turned back to Anderson. “I told you about him! Now do you believe me?”
He shrugged. Then he took hold of Maxwell’s arm and said “Things are looking pretty bad for Mr. Simpson all right, but we do still need to find that missing cassava. Until we find it, we have to keep an open mind.”
Keeping an open mind means he still suspected me! I stared blankly as he started to go.
“Good night, sir,” he said, “And watch out for the broken glass.”
Anderson pulled Maxwell out of the café and pushed him into a squad car, then he and rest of the police drove away.
My kitchen was a mess, with spilled sugar, scattered pans, and yes, a little pile of broken glass near the front door. Spunky found the courage to come down and supervise as I cleaned up.
I couldn’t sleep, so I spent the rest of the night cleaning and baking some homemade marshmallows for the café, just waiting for it to be time for Sally to get up.
I texted her as soon as I could, and she rushed right over. I told her all about the break-in and how Maxwell had claimed that he was looking for the cassava flour to prove that I was the murderer. She was distressed and started ranting.
“That Maxwell! That pig! I could just kill—” she paused and gasped.
