CHECKING OUT

Hunt Robinson was standing beside his hospital bed, now dressed in a new set of clothing most likely brought by Janine the previous day, when Monroe and Anjli arrived at the hospital ward.

‘Come to give me a sendoff?’ he asked, quite jovial for the time of day and the circumstances he was in. ‘They finally allowed me out. I can go home.’

‘I don't think you'll be going home just yet,’ Monroe replied, stepping forwards. ‘Mister Robinson, I’m—’

‘I know who you are, DCI Monroe,’ Robinson smiled. ‘I know all of you media-friendly police types.’

‘I’m a media-friendly police type?’

‘Yeah, you've done enough things to get you in the papers. And I've known about you for a while. You're even in my book.’ Robinson winked. ‘Not as a major character, though. More as a side character, standing around, you know, being in the room when things happened.’

‘That sounds ominous,’ Monroe stated, his voice emotionless. ‘Maybe you should tell me a little more.’

‘Oh, I don't think I will,’ Robinson carried on getting his items together. ‘I think I'll leave that to whoever you get to do your memoirs. Because, let’s face it, you’ll not be writing it yourself, too many utterances of “jings!” and “hoots, mon!” for the average reader.’

Monroe ignored the insult, glanced at Anjli, and then frowned as he turned his attention back to Robinson.

‘You seem remarkably chipper for a man who yesterday was worried his entire world was falling apart,’ Anjli interrupted, stepping forwards to join Monroe now. ‘Do you have information on the book’s location?’

‘No. Do you?’

‘Actually, we might,’ Monroe replied. ‘Have you seen today's newspapers?’

‘Yeah, I saw,’ Robinson’s eyes narrowed, as he realised this possibly wasn't the conversation he was expecting to have.

‘Karen Pine put out another story. I wonder where she'd got that from? Maybe she got it from your book?’

‘It’s a possibility,’ Robinson nodded warily. ‘She’s always been snapping at my heels.’

‘But where would she have seen the story?’ Anjli asked, looking at Monroe with mock confusion. ‘She would have had to hold the book, flick through the pages to see it?’

‘Ah, yes, she probably read it while Mister Robinson was sleeping,’ Monroe replied earnestly, glancing back to the now annoyed Robinson.

‘Are you insinuating that I had an affair with a rival journalist?’ he snapped. ‘Are you sure you want to go down that route with a man well versed in libel and slander cases?’ He shrugged. ‘Bring it on. I could do with some payouts.’

‘Oh, I don't think we need to worry about that at the moment,’ Monroe grinned a dark, humourless smile. ‘You see, me thinking you've had an affair is the last thing you should be worrying about right now.’

He looked back at Anjli, a conflicted expression on his face.

‘I just don't know what we arrest him with,’ he said, almost sadly. ‘I mean, if you fake a suicide, then you get mental health assistance. Likewise, if you actually try to kill yourself, for real. If you fake an abduction or a kidnapping, well, that's mainly wasting police time.
