When Liv and Archie drove away from George Nealey’s flat, they were convinced that there was nothing more they could glean from the location. But Clara had given them the phone number for the most recent victim of Michael Bates’ medicine scam.

“Mrs Daniels?” Liv spoke into the phone, putting it on speaker so Archie could hear. “I’m Detective Inspector Olivia Austin with Newquay Police. We understand you had an encounter with a man named Michael Bates.”

“‘An encounter?’” a young voice snorted back before clearing her throat. “You could say that. The fucker swindled my mum.”

“Perhaps you could tell us where you live so that we can come and see you?” Olivia suggested, not wanting to have what was sure to be an upsetting conversation over the phone.

Once Mika Daniels had given them her address, Liv directed the car to the address.

On the way, the pair speculated more about the case.

“Why?” Archie asked uncomprehending. “Why would somebody offer dying people false hope?”

“Same reason everybody screws everybody over—money,” the inspector replied simply, grateful for DS Elmhurst’s inability to comprehend the cruelty of others. Sometimes, I feel like this guy is far too pure for this job.
