CHAPTER SEVEN

I FINISHED my drink without answering. "Want more?" he asked.

I shook my head.

"You got something coming for that five bucks you spent to join the club last night," he said.

"I didn't get much for it, that's a fact," I said, "but it wasn't my money."

Brick laughed. "What kind of a story did Luzy give you pal?" he asked.

I gave him an innocent stare. "What gives you the idea I talked to her?"

He snorted in disgust. "Come now, newshound!"

"You ought to know where she is. You're her boss," I said. "How does it happen that you hired her, if you knew she worked for Clarence Proost?"

"Sometimes it's better to know your enemies," said Brick. The way he said it told me that this wasn't the right answer.

"Could it be that you felt that Proost couldn't hurt you?"

I asked. "You knew all about the raid, didn't you? You knew it was coming."

Brick laughed. But before he could answer, Bomo admitted himself with a key. "Them guys working on the phone line say they're from the telephone company, boss. They said you reported phone trouble."

"That's a lie." Brick picked up a phone behind the bar. He dialed a number while I watched. He didn't realize that he was calling a number that was easy to memorize: UNiversity 4-3400. He waited a moment, then: "Hello, honey? How you makin' out? Oh, no special reason, honey. Somebody said the phone wasn't workin' and I was just tryin' it out . . . no, I wasn't checking up on you. . . . What the hell? Maybe I should check up!" He slammed the phone back in its cradle. "Women!" he said.

He went to the window and looked out. "Wire tappin' is illegal!" he said.

"Just shows how lax our law enforcement agencies are," I told him.

He turned on his heel and gave me a stare.

"All right, funny man," he said. "Let's talk turkey. Where's Luzy McGuire?"

I shrugged. "That's what the cops want to know."

"And if the cops find her and learn that you've hidden her, you'll be in the cell next door."

"Maybe she's in his room, boss," said Jim.

Brick looked at me. Then he shook his head. "That's the first place the cops would look," he said.

"They already did," I told him.

"She was at the Hotel Creston," Brick went on. "A bellhop tipped me off. She dyed her hair blonde and went out the side door a little before noon today. She got in a convertible—a red Ford convertible. That's your car, chum."

He had me there. I didn't answer.

"Jim," said Brick Lorchetto, "maybe you ought to persuade this guy a little. Work him over nice. Don't put any marks where they show. He's a nice lookin' young fellow and we don't want to spoil him for the girls."

"Yah," said Jim, and he moved toward me.

"Wait a minute," I said. "Let's talk this over."

"Where is she?" asked Brick.

"I don't know!"

Jim Bomo swung, hard. His fist ran into my belly up to his wrist and I felt like I'd been kicked by a bear.
