5 A cropped hoodie. Simple and practical—I put mine on if there’s a chill in the air—but the shorter, boxier shape is more fun than your basic zip-up sweatshirt. Look for colors like black, white, and gray that work with everything else you own. Or go for a bold color if you want to add some pop to an all-black outfit.

6 A two-piece set. I have these great velvet leggings that came with a matching cropped pullover and I love the look. It feels really put-together without much effort, and velvet makes anything seem dressier. I wear this all the time to go out to dinner. I’d recommend a basic black set in your wardrobe, but maybe also one in a bright color—so you can mix and match them. Velvet or velour feels very luxe.
