Chapter Twenty-Six

Eira wasn’t sure what Dagen was going to say. She wasn’t even sure how the revelation that Ayden was coming to kill him had affected him. And after twenty years of being married to him, of knowing him and loving him, she was afraid. Afraid he meant to let their son kill him and become a murderer.

It had been a day since Nimara had arrived and told them of Tarian. They’d known the child they had raised was not of their blood, but to be presented with the truth of all that Herne had done had broken her apart. She’d wept in Dagen’s arms until she had no more tears within her. Now they were to meet with her sister. She glanced at Dagen, wishing she knew what he was thinking.

They continued down the corridor towards Coralie’s rooms and he raised her hand, kissing her knuckles lightly, yet nothing about him was light. He strode purposefully, his shoulders squared and jaw tight. He was every bit the impassive Toran warrior, and she wished he would join her in her grief.

They paused at her sister’s door, and she tugged on his hand, stilling him from opening it, his dark eyes falling on her, a note of question to him.

‘What are you feeling?’ she whispered. His hand fell away from the door, and he flicked his fingers, their soldiers falling back, turning away to give them privacy.

‘My heart has been cleaved in two,’ he replied, keeping his voice low. ‘I had believed our children safe, but this last winter showed us that the son we have raised was not the same as the son we made.’

She looked away from him. Ayden’s illness. He had become weaker, a shimmering gold ring encompassing his iris. For days he had been unable to rise, wasting away in his bed and they had called healers to him, one after another, until finally they were told he had a blood illness, one that had passed from his parents. That was when they had realised Herne’s deception.

Dagen caught her chin with strong, gentle fingers, drawing her back to look at him. ‘I will make this right,’ he promised.

‘How?’ she choked, tears blurring her vision. He wiped them away as they fell. ‘I cannot lose you, Dagen. He cannot become the child who murdered his father.’

‘Trust me,’ he replied, placing a light kiss on her lips, one she wanted longer, deeper. One that would rob her of all feeling but her ardour for him. He placed his hand back on the door and led her into her sister’s rooms.

Coralie was in the living area, seated among numerous cushions on a jade and gold settee. There was no lightness to her as she greeted them and gestured to the settee opposite her.

‘Lucas will join us shortly. He is just checking on May. She has had a bad cough these last few days.’

‘We’ll wait,’ Eira said, before Dagen could dismiss him. Even after all this time, he disliked Lucas. It wasn’t open animosity anymore, thankfully.
