Chapter Nine

Bain followed Marcus, who’d been staying with Bain since Katrina’s disappearance. They’d become roommates of a sort. It seemed Marcus was afraid Bain would disappear next. Marcus sat down in one of the large living room recliners. Bain sat down directly in front of him.

“I haven’t forgotten the whole oath thing.”

“Can we do this later? It’s nothing really.”

“If it’s nothing, then spit it out.”

“It’s not important.”

“If it has something to do with you, then it’s important to me,” Bain stated, and it was the truth. Marcus was important to him, and if something was wrong, Bain wanted to help.

Marcus leaned forward, braced his elbows on his knees, and buried his face in his hands. “Please let it go. It will make everything even more confusing.”

Bain stood and moved closer to Marcus before setting one of his front paws on Marcus’s leg. “Trust me, I want to help.”

Marcus raised his head to look at Bain with red-rimmed eyes. “You need to promise not to mention this to Katrina. I don’t want this swaying her choice.”

“It’s that bad?”

“Yes,” Marcus said, and Bain sensed no deceit.

“Okay. Unless you’re dying, then all bets are off.”

“It’s a blood oath, so that’s a possible outcome,” Marcus said with a stricken expression.

A blood oath was the highest oath a shifter could give. If you broke it, you died. “What the hell did you swear a blood oath for?”

“I was young and I wanted to make my mother happy again. So…”

Bain listened as Marcus recounted what he’d done. If his mother weren’t already dead, Bain would have forced her to recant the oath. Marcus was only a child when he had agreed to enter the oath. Wasn’t there some sort of rule against taking advantage of a minor who couldn’t understand the ramifications of such a request? When Marcus had finished telling the story, he looked drained and anxious.

“This is why you never mated Katrina before.”

“Yeah. I made my choice to be a warrior, which can never be undone. I knew a mate was out of the question. However, when Ewald died and I took responsibility for Katrina and her child, I thought nothing of it. Until I ended up falling in love with her.”

“That’s why you needed me.”

“Yes and no. I saw how Katrina looked at you, and when I knew the emotions were reciprocated, I offered to back away.”

“You were willing to let Katrina go so that she could be happy. But what about you?”

“Me?”

“Yes, you. What about your happiness? What about your life?” Bain wasn’t upset that Marcus had kept this a secret, he could understand why. But it wouldn’t have changed Bain’s mind. They both loved Katrina and Thorn.

“Wait, you’re not pissed about this?” Marcus asked. “I worried you’d think I was using you to bypass my blood oath.”

“No, of course not. You were ready to step aside. We wanted you to stay and create a triad. Would you be upset with me if I told you that at times I worry that
