Kasdeya

“Are you sure?” Kasdeya’s hand paused in lifting her coffee mug to her lips. “I’ve seen the things that place does firsthand.”

“I am sure. We will not leave without Abaddon in chains.” She turned to Agatha. “You have the chain in your bag?”

“I do. It’s heavy.” Agatha hefted the bag. “It will have to be a small group, Shayna. We’ll never get close enough if we bring everyone.”

“It’s you, me, and Kasdeya.”

“What?” Kasdeya’s hand shook hard enough to spill coffee down her black shirt. “Why me? I’m the weakest one here.”

“Because you know him the best. Once we get there, you’ll be the best judge of where he might be. The place is large.”

No, no, no. She couldn’t face him again. Not without a large group of warriors between them. “I can’t.”

Shayna narrowed her eyes. “You can, and you will.” With that, she marched from the kitchen.

“She’s already had this argument with Pierce who didn’t want to stay behind,” Agatha said. “The three of us can handle Abaddon. He cannot escape these chains once bound. Stay with us, and you’ll be fine.”

Kasdeya felt again as if she had to remain at Shayna’s side in order to be watched. What possible use could she be to the other two? She checked her pockets for her inhaler, stalling before she joined the others outside.

Marshal put his hands on her shoulders from behind. “Promise you’ll return to me.”

“I can’t make that easily with only the three of us going.” She turned and wrapped him in a hug. “I don’t want to go, Luke.”

“You’re going with two of the best.” He rested his chin on the top of her head. “I’ll see you later.” He tilted her face to his. “Shayna wouldn’t be taking you if she didn’t need to.”

She hoped he was right. On her tiptoes, she placed a kiss at the corner of his lips. “I’ll give you a real kiss when I return.”

His lips curled into a smile. “I’ll be looking forward to it.” Taking her by the hand, he led her to the back porch where the others waited.

Shayna glanced up from her goodbyes with Pierce, then cupped her man’s face. “I’ll see you later.”

He nodded, swallowing hard. “Until later. I love you, my faerie queen.”

After kissing him, she turned a grave look on Kasdeya. “We’ll be teleporting. I trust you’re wearing your chain mail?”

“I am.” She squeezed Luke’s hand.

“Wear this. Never take it off.” She handed Kasdeya a silver cross necklace. “It will help.” Shayna held out her hands to Kasdeya and Agatha. The moment they touched, she teleported them outside a massive brick building. Four stories high and spreading across a lawn filled with weeds, the sight struck fear in her heart.

Kasdeya slipped the necklace over her head and tucked it inside her shirt.

“Stay close and stay low.” Shayna led them to a side door, then stepped aside for Agatha.

The witch spread some type of greasy substance on the hinges and the door swung open without a sound.
