Me: Ahh, they’re just scared of your height and strength.

Ebony: For sure, ha ha...

Me: Their loss if they don’t want to play, but I doubt it. We’ll be fine.

Ebony: Okay, I guess. I could go at 2.

Me: Great. I’ll see you there.

I put the phone down and smiled at the fact that I had now mastered text messaging and that Ebony hadn’t sent me any strange pictures of her shoulder or the top of her hair. I wouldn’t have known what to send back.

Sounds of heavy steps on the stairs made me look up to see William. He was wearing sweatpants, socks, and a t-shirt that said It’s okay if you don’t like me, not everyone has good taste. With his hair all messy it looked like he had just woken up.

“Good morning,” I said in a friendly tone but all I got was grumpy sounds like he was annoyed that I was there.

I wondered if something bad had happened to him since he had such a negative energy around him.

“Hey, Will.”

He turned his head to me. “What?”

I got up from the couch and went to sit on a barstool as he poured himself cereal.

“I heard a rumor yesterday.”

“Oh yeah, what about?”

“About me.”

That seemed to lose his attention and he replied with a disinterested grunt.

“Apparently people think I’m gay.”

“Aren’t you?” He put the milk back in the fridge.

“No, I’m not. What would give you that impression?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. You used to listen to that Katy Perry song about kissing a girl all the time.”

I stared at him. “I was six years old.”

“Yeah, so? What would I know?” Will hadn’t made eye contact with me yet and he still threw off waves of annoyance. I watched him as he slowly tried to balance the bowl of cereal in his hands. He had poured milk to the top of the bowl and colorful Lucky Charms were balancing like a small mountain defying the law of gravity. Carefully, he pulled a chair out from the dining table with his foot and sat down looking pleased with himself that he hadn’t spilled the contents. I followed him, grateful that Julie had a strict no food in your room rule. This gave me a chance to talk to him.

“Why are you always so angry with me?” I asked and took a seat across from him.

“I’m not angry. Just embarrassed.”

“You’re embarrassed of being my brother?”

He didn’t answer but dipped his head and stuffed his mouth with cereal.

“You know that picture on my wall of us as kids? We have our arms around each other and look so happy. What changed?” I spoke slowly to let each word sink in.

“Don’t do that.” He looked up from his bowl, rolling his eyes. “You were an asshole back then too. You used to tell on me all the time.”

“Will.” I leaned forward waiting for his attention. “We both have built up resentment towards each other, and I think it’s time we get it all out on the table and talk about it.
