CHAPTER 15

MILLWALL

‘Go out there and score!’ Jermain shouted as Harry ran on to replace him.

Tottenham were already 3–0 up against Shamrock Rovers. There was still time for him to grab a fourth.

Danny Rose’s cross flew over Harry’s head but Andros was there at the back post. As he knocked it down, Harry reacted first and shot past the defender on the line.

Gooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harry turned away to celebrate with Andros. What a feeling! He roared up at the sky. He was a Tottenham goalscorer now, and he could put that awful penalty miss behind him.

Unfortunately, however, that was the end of Tottenham’s Europa League campaign. It was a real blow for their young players because the tournament was their big chance to shine. What would happen now? There wasn’t space for them in Spurs’ Premier League squad, so they would either have to go back to the Reserves or out on loan again.

‘Right now, I just want to play week in week out,’ Harry told his dad. ‘I don’t care where!’

Pat smiled. ‘Be careful what you wish for. You wouldn’t like the cold winters in Russia!’

In the end, Harry and Ryan were sent on loan to Millwall in January 2012. The Lions were fighting to stay in the Championship and they needed goals.

‘We only scored one goal in the whole of December,’ Harry’s new manager Kenny Jackett moaned. ‘We played five matches, that’s over 450 minutes of football!’

Harry’s job was clear and he couldn’t wait to help his new team. In his Millwall debut against Bristol City, he had a few chances to score but he couldn’t get past former England goalkeeper David James. When City won the match with a last-minute goal, Harry couldn’t believe it. He trudged off the pitch with tears in his eyes.

‘Hard luck, kid,’ Jackett said, putting an arm around his shoulder. ‘You played well. The goals will come.’

His new strike partner, Andy Keogh, gave him similar advice. ‘Just forget about the misses. If you keep thinking about them, you’ll never score!’

The Millwall players and coaches liked Harry and they wanted him to do well. Despite his talent, he wasn’t an arrogant wonderkid who thought he was way too good for them. He was a friendly guy, who worked hard for the team and always wanted to improve.

But six weeks later, Harry was still waiting for his first league goal for Millwall. It was the longest drought of his whole life. What was going wrong? Why couldn’t he just put the ball in the net? Eventually, he did it away at Burnley.

He made the perfect run and James Henry played the perfect pass. Harry was through on goal. Surely, he couldn’t miss this one! The goalkeeper rushed out to stop him but he stayed calm and used his side foot to guide the ball into the bottom corner.

Goooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harry pumped his fists and jumped into the air. It was finally over! James threw himself into Harry’s arms.

‘Thanks mate!’ Millwall’s new goalscorer shouted above the noise of the fans.
