Chapter Eighteen

When I awoke, the bone-deep weariness I had been expecting wasn’t there. Instead I felt warm and comfortable. It was dark, but from the smell, I knew we were back in the cave. I just didn’t know how. I rolled to my side before sitting up and caught sight of Lucas and Kegan with their heads together in conversation.

Lucas turned to look at me, but Kegan was the one who asked, “How are you feeling?”

“Good, actually.” I brushed my hair back from my face and got up to join them. The temperature in the cave was more tolerable. Kegan must have done something with the air currents or put some shields up to make it livable.

“How are you?” I asked. “Did I miss any injuries?”

Kegan shook his head. “No, I think everything is perfect. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” I sat down next to him and met Lucas’s eyes. The corner of his lips moved slightly, but he didn’t quite make it into a smile. I looked back at Kegan. “What happened to you? Was all of that from Claire?”

“Yeah. I tried to block her, but I couldn’t manage to get my shields up. And fire was almost impossible. I couldn’t conjure enough heat out there in the snow. Before I got some ice balls formed, Claire was on me and I couldn’t think straight. Almost like my mind was being muddled.”

“Quinn’s spells?” I asked and looked at Lucas.

“Probably. But I didn’t see her near Claire. She all of a sudden showed up. I couldn’t even sense her until she was right behind me.”

“I think she used Denise, like you thought. When we all went down after Quinn tried to hurt you, Denise was there, and then they both disappeared like you used to do.”

“What happened when Quinn hurt you?” Kegan asked. “Why did it affect all of you?”

Lucas looked at me and I nodded. “We’re all bound somehow. Kat was accidental, but Quinn did some kind of spell that connected the two of us. When she’s hurt, I feel it. When I’m hurt, they both feel it.” He looked at me again. “But I don’t know if Quinn and Kat feel it if just the other one is hurt.”

Kegan met my eyes. “We can’t hurt Quinn without hurting either of you?”

I took a deep breath. “Looks like it.”

“So what do we do?” Kegan asked. “How are we going to stop her?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “But we’ll figure something out.”

“We’ll have to get Emily, Denise, and Claire back first,” Kegan said. “I don’t think we can fight her off until we have them.”

“Yeah, but how do we do that? She’s got powers we don’t have,” I said.

Kegan drummed his fingers on his knee. “She’s somehow convinced them to work for her. Neither of them would have chosen to do what she said on their own.”

“It has to be a spell,” I said. “And for every spell, there’s a counter spell.”

“Do you know one?” Lucas asked.

“No, but there might be one in my book at home.
