Chapter Nine

He’d come for her.

She wasn’t sure why that was such a surprise other than the fact that no one other than her parents had dared cross Metias. They’d tried to get to her, spotting the signs she’d married a monster from a mile away, but her husband had isolated her well. It was only after she’d come to terms with her failing marriage that she realized she had to be the one to take that first step. That she needed to be brave.

And she’d do it again. Not just for herself this time. For Cash.

The tip of the blade pricked her palm. Surrounded by Metias’s men, she wasn’t sure how they were going to get themselves out of this, but she trusted the man who’d saved her from a cartel abduction once before. Elena rotated her forearm toward her body to conceal the weapon. It was still stained with the guard’s blood. Now it would save her and Cash’s lives.

“Here’s what’s going to happen, Mr. Meyers. You and your dog have done enough damage, so I’m going to give you the chance to walk away.” Only Metias didn’t negotiate. It was a lie. There was no way her ex would let Cash or Bear survive after what they’d done.

“Just like that?” Interest sparked in Cash’s voice, but an underlying suspicion narrowed his gaze. He was too intelligent to believe a word out of a warlord’s mouth. “And Elena? Her brother? What happens to them?”

“They’ll stay here. Of course.” Metias glanced back over his shoulder to the men behind him, a scoff escaping that perfect mouth. “Where they belong.”

“In that case.” Cash cut his attention to her, and in that moment, she knew. She knew what he was about to do, and he was relying on her to do her part. It was the only way they were going to get out of here alive. “No deal.”

In her next breath, she gathered every ounce of courage she could hold on to. “Metias.” She waited for her ex to turn toward her. “This is for locking me in that cellar.”

Elena let the blade drop from inside her shirt sleeve and grabbed the handle before the knife hit the cement. She stabbed the blade into the side of his thigh. His scream pierced her eardrums as she lunged to escape the ring of his security detail.

One caught her around the waist. A bullet threw his head back, and the soldier hit the floor. Bear growled from somewhere behind her. She wasn’t sure, but she couldn’t slow down enough to try to keep track of her and her handler. The second floor. This was her only chance to find Daniel.

A rain of gunfire ricocheted off the wall to her left. Cut off by a deep grunt and a bellowing howl. Covering her head as though her hands could stop bullets, she wrenched free of the circle of remaining guards. Oxygen caught in her chest as a strong hand threaded between her rib cage and arm.
