âGael!â Gabi called from behind him and as soon as he turned, a wet, cold clump of snow hit him right in the face.
âEat it, sucker!â
He didnât have the chance to ask if it was on purpose, because his pain in the ass of a sister was already running toward him with another snowball.
âOh, no, you donât,â he called, bending down to pile some snow in his hands. âPerla, get behind me. Sheâs ruthless.â
He heard a snicker and turned around to see Perla packing a ball of her own.
âGood. Iâll need reinforcements,â he said, affecting the voice of his character in the Space Squadron, a military general who could blast fireballs from his hands. âHeads up,â he bellowed as he avoided another face full of snow and pelted his sister on the elbow.
Perla was small but fast, and soon she was also chucking snowballs in Gabiâs direction. âPerla Sambrano, do not throw snow at my head!â his twin sister shrieked. âYou know I donât like getting my hair wet.â Gael grinned like a loon when he heard Perlaâs apology and then saw a snowball hit Gabi right in the solar plexus.
âYes!â he crowed, throwing a fist in the air as he ran for cover. âGet her, babe!â The word was out of his mouth before he could stop himself. Perlaâs hand froze and the snowball she was packing crumbled on her palm as she looked at him. What the hell was going on with him? Why did he have to keep testing the boundaries? He had just come to a place that worked for both of them, and already he was trying to push past it into something else. But his annoying sister wasnât done throwing snow at him.
âYouâre really gonna get it now, Gabriela Montez!â he yelled as he brushed snow off the back of his head, grateful the fight distracted Perla from what heâd just said. As soon as he stood up, snow hit him from all directions; he gave up trying to throw his own and covered his face with his hands. âEt tu, Perla?â he joked and heard both women cackle with laughter.
âYouâve been defeated,â Perla boasted as she made her way to him. She looked so happy, her face open. Beaming. It was a wonder how heâd fooled himself as long as he had when it came to his feelings for her. She filled him up. Seeing her smile always nourished something in him no one else ever could. There was this constant yawning void in him that even his loving family couldnât fill. It gnawed at him constantly, but her presence had always eased it. Heâd felt the difference when heâd met her in college. And since heâd given her up it had just grown bigger. Fame, fortune...none of it could make it better. But today, seeing this Perla, whom he thought was lost to him forever, laughing with glee as she tossed snow up in the air, made his cup run over. Fulfilled and overflowing.
