“I’m pretty sure this is illegal,” Boone said. Even in the dark, he was handsome. It was so unfair. It was like he had been genetically modified. We were standing at the Goodnight UFOs back door. The parking lot was empty, and the Plaza was quiet.

“No, it’s not. I know the owner,” I said. “Go ahead and pick the lock. I need to snoop around and gather clues.”

Boone ran a hand over his hair. “See now, when you use the word ‘snoop,’ I have to infer illegality.”

“What’re you talking about? Stop sounding like a lawyer. It’s all semantics, and nobody says ‘infer.’ When you say ‘infer,’ it totally ruins your point,” I said.

“Words are coming out of your mouth, but I’m not sure they mean what you think they mean. I don’t want to get arrested. Amos is itching to arrest me. Nothing would make him happier than to see me behind bars.”

“I’m almost sure he won’t arrest you. I’ll tell him it was my idea.”

Boone threw his head back and took a deep breath. “Convince me. Tell me again how you know the owner.”

“I know the owner. She would want me to look around and find the real killer, even if Amos warned me off of snooping and said to mind my own business.”

“You were doing well until the last bit,” he said.

“Just do it. I’m adding it to our wooing agreement.”

Boone forced the lock open, and we walked inside. We used our phones for lights. The store looked normal. The caterers or someone else had cleaned up after the party, and the shop looked like it was ready for business as usual. It was packed with merchandise.

“Take a wide berth around the Venutian Divining Rods,” Boone requested.

“Don’t worry. I won’t do that again. Let’s go upstairs.”

Upstairs was a different story. It wasn’t business as usual at all. Between the paramedics and Amos’s men, Faye’s apartment was completely torn up. “I wonder what Amos was looking for,” I muttered.

“I don’t even know what we’re looking for.”

“We’re looking for proof that Gregor or Harley or Christine tried to kill Norton. Or JoBeth.”

“I’m sure that JoBeth didn’t try to kill Norton. She doesn’t even know him.”

“Don’t defend her, or you’ll never touch my breasts.”

“You’re a tough woman, Matilda.”

I crawled around on the floor, hoping to find a dropped cigarette holder, Ritz cracker, or a pushup bra. Anything to prove their guilt. But I didn’t find anything.

“Maybe we’re going at this the wrong way,” Boone said. “Maybe we need to figure out why Norton was almost murdered. I mean, why would anyone want to kill him? He’s a nice guy.”

“I know why he was almost killed,” I insisted. “It’s because there are bad people in the world.”

“Point taken.”

But Boone was right. What did I know about Norton except for his alien beliefs? “You know, his office is downstairs in back with the inventory,” I said.

We ran downstairs and searched Norton’s office. According to his books that we found, the shop was solidly in the black.
