Individuation and groups

In Jungian terms, individuation means the realization of the potential innate in each individual. Thus the term is connected with the development of the individual’s personality through distinguishing one’s own uniqueness from collective thought and values. In social relationships the process of individuation assumes that an individual relates to others in his or her own unique way and experiences the values of the group he belongs to in a more inner-directed and personal way. Group values are not accepted passively but re-claimed and worked out again in a spontaneous way, keeping a certain dose of innovative energy alive. In the broadest sense of the term, individuation guides a person towards the realization of the Self as the complete expression of himself as a whole and also stands in relation to a person’s fulfilling his own human destiny. The function that pushes an individual towards this goal is identified as the transcendent function. During the course of an individual’s entire existence, the transcendent function relates the consciousness of the ego to the contents of the unconscious, which manifest themselves through a continual transformation.

Likewise, every group can be thought of as a single individual entity with its own collective attitudes and potential development, which are expressed in the social life of the group itself. The members may or may not be skilled in building relationships in a social life or may or may not be open to the world outside. In any case, a group can only progress towards individuation within the sheltered time and space of its temenos. In a way, the individuation of a group consists in the history and possible destiny of a group at a particular moment, where they are and where they may be headed, no matter what kind of group it is.
