Chapter 32

“I WISH I COULD HELP more,” I told Nadine and Kerrick as they sat in my office Wednesday morning, two weeks after the camping trip. I was five days out from having shaved off my beard. I didn’t leave a single hair behind. I even kept it smooth after the initial shave. Based on the way she stared at me, Nadine clearly cared, but I wondered if it was a sign that Lucy might hate it, too, since Nadine would probably know something like this. I hadn’t seen Lucy to know for sure.

“Well, there is the wait list for the state assistance,” Kerrick added.

“There is that. However, you were already granted mortgage modifications and refinancing. You were granted forbearance twice. You also received referrals to state and national agencies who help homeowners keep their homes. I believe those housing counselors have done all they can for you.”

I would have canceled the Larkins’ debt if I had the power. I would have eliminated the requirement for the remaining mortgage balance to be paid. I would have done anything and everything to help these people if I could. They’d already had to fend off judicial foreclosure due to their mortgage delinquency and did so by the skin of their teeth. But it just wasn’t in my power to do more. All I had was one more extension, and it was almost up.

“So there isn’t anything else you can do?” Nadine asked.

All I could manage was a shake of my head.

My meeting with the Larkins ended with me passing on the phone number of a mortgage counselor I’d recommended to many customers. She was kind and helpful, but I had a feeling she’d tell the Larkins exactly what I did. They had reached a point where no more help could be found.

Then I wondered what would happen if the Larkins did lose their home, or at least their cabin. Since I was in charge of their account, would they blame me, or would Nadine, at least? Worse, would Lucy?

She’d begged me to do something before, and I refused. My moral code apparently only went so far, considering what immoral things I was doing in the meantime, like a certain bet to get her to sleep with me. Lucy had enough ammo to hate me forever. I didn’t want to add to that list. I strolled down to Tess’s office. Her assistant was away, so Tess called me in after I announced myself with a knock.

“I have to help the Larkins. I refuse to sit by and let this happen. That involves contacting people Shubin will also have contact with. I can’t screw this up.”

Tess waited after I finished my speech. Finally, she said, “They’ve heard all the sob stories, Pete. There isn’t anything you can do. Except maybe keep them from having to fend off judicial foreclosure again.”

“How can I do that?”

“I’m assuming they still have their attorneys.”

I nodded.

“Let me write down some notes.” Tess grinned.
