We wave wildly and call out to them. ‘Mum, there are animals that need you everywhere!’

‘Coming!’ she calls. All of them start to put on their life jackets and get ready to join the rescue.

We jump in the canoe with all our rescued creatures and head towards Mum. ‘Max, come and see!’ I call.

Max is waiting eagerly at the edge of the water when we pull up.

‘Look in here,’ I whisper, and hold the pillowcase open for him to see.

‘It’s a blue-tongue!’ screeches Max. He loves lizards. It’s because they remind him of dinosaurs. ‘It looks just like Killer!’ he yelps. ‘Is it Killer, Mum, can you tell?’

Killer is the blue-tongue lizard that Mum treated for burns after a really big bushfire. Max got to keep him for a while, but had to let him go when he was well enough. I know Max has really missed him.

‘It might be,’ smiles Mum. ‘It would be great to know that he is doing well, if it is.’ She carefully lifts the blue-tongue out of the pillowcase. There are burn scars on his tail. ‘It is Killer!’ she cries.

I don’t think Max could have been more excited if Mum had pulled a triceratops out of that bag. ‘Can I keep him again, Mum? I still have the tank. Can I keep him pleeeeease?’

‘Honey, he’s not injured,’ says Mum quietly. ‘No one is allowed to keep reptiles they find in the wild. It’s against the law. Killer needs to be free. It’s not fair to put him in a little tank, is it?’

Max nods. His mouth turns down and I can see he is trying to be brave.

Suddenly I have an idea. ‘Are you allowed to keep stick insects you find in the wild?’ I ask.

‘Actually, you are,’ says Mum, ‘if you care for them properly, of course.’

Max is just about to say he doesn’t want an insect as a pet, when Chelsea bends down and opens the box beside her. Out crawls the amazing looking Spiny Leaf stick insect.

‘That is way cool,’ says Chelsea’s brother Tom, as the stick insect rocks back and forth on the rim of the container.
