The downstairs phone drew me from my revelry the next morning. I picked it up on the second ring.
âMatsuda Tea and Sweets.â
âMako?â
My heart jumped. A voice I hadnât heard in a long time replied. Possibly the voice I needed to hear most.
âMegu?â
âOh thank god, you havenât changed numbers! I was worried that maybe you moved and didnât tell me, or maybe Ms Matsuda changed the number, orââ
âHow are you?â It was so good to hear her voice again. The only blood relative I had left in the world. We didnât see each other often, and our contact was usually kept to holidays or big events, but in that moment, Meguâs voice was the one I needed to hear most. I missed her.
âIâm⦠yeah. Okay, I guess,â she replied. âA lot of stuffâs been going on here. I donât even know where to beginâ¦â
âStuff like what?â
Megu laughed, a sad, pitiable sound.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah, no. Maybe. I donât know. I⦠I met this girl.â
âOkayâ¦â
âAnd there was a bunch of things⦠you knowâ¦â
I didnât know, but I nodded anyway. She couldnât see me, but it was a habit.
âAnyway, to cut a very long story short, it turns out sheâs⦠different.â
I wasnât following. âDifferent how?â
âLike you. I think. Maybe. I donât⦠Help me out here, Mako.â
Megu was as scatter-brained as always. âMegu, I have no idea what youâre talking about.â
She sighed. The sound brought a smile to my lips. She was flustered and terrible at hiding it. âI met this girl. Sheâs very cute. But something was chasing her. Or at least, we thought something was chasing herâ¦â
âOkayâ¦â
âI tried to help her. I thought it was a ghost or something, or maybe something her father conjured. I donât know how these things work, that was always your thing. But anyway, itâs not a ghost. Not really. I donât think so. It was always around her, or connected to her, or inside her, orââ
âSounds like an ikiryo.â
There was silence on the other end. âA what now?â
âIkiryo. A living spirit. Youâre right, itâs not a ghost, not really. Not of a dead person, anyway. Itâs the spirit of someone whoâs still alive.â
ââ¦Huh. That actually makes a lot of sense now.â
I tried to hide my smile. Megu was older than me, but she always reminded me of a younger sister. âAn ikiryo usually comes about to seek vengeance or revenge for something done to the person in question. Theyâre rare, but they can be extremely powerful.â
Megu snorted. âYeah, no kiddingâ¦â
âSo this girlâs cute, huh?â
I could hear Megu blushing from several prefectures away. âMaybe. Shut up. So anyway, putting that aside for the moment, how are things with you? I havenât heard from you in a while.â
The store was empty. Not like talking to my one and only cousin for a few more minutes would do any harm, and maybe she could help the storm that was brewing in my heart.
âSayumiâs missing.â
âWhat?â Sayumi was always kind to Megu, and Megu looked up to her like an aunt.
âShe left a few weeks ago.
