CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Hailey wasnât sure what she was looking at, but she knew it creeped her out.
She stood with Graham and the reporter Tim Ziegler at the entrance to a rock overhang at the side of a hill half a mile from the nearest road. It was about ten yards wide and three deep at its deepest point. The region was filled with rock shelters and caves, used by native tribes in prehistoric times, then by early settlers while they were building their log cabins, and later by Civil War guerrillas, bandits like Jesse James, and modern moonshiners.
This one was being used by someone very, very different.
The ceiling of the rock shelter was painted with a large demon head in red with a 666 next to it. There was also some illegible text that might have been a foreign language or some sort of occult symbols.
The floor of the rock shelter had a pentagram made out of river stones painted black, with the burnt stubs of candles at each corner. To one side was a strange model made out of mud. It stood about ten inches high and looked like some sort of hunchbacked humanoid. Its face, crudely sculpted with a knife or some similar tool, had slit eyes and a twisted mouth. It had little stubby arms ending in sticks taken from a thorn bush. It seemed to reach out at them from the shade of the rock shelter.
âDamn,â Hailey muttered. âHow long has this been here?â
âNot sure,â the reporter answered. âIt was first brought to my attention a month ago. We had the police come out to take a look once or twice, but since there was no sign of illegal activity, they didn't do anything. This is my fourth time back here, and it's changed a bit. That painting was always there, but the rocks on the pentagram have been repainted a few times. They used to be red, and before that they had gold paint. Plus, the mud figure has been different each time. I got pictures I can show you."
âLetâs see,â Graham said.
The two FBI agents got in close as the reporter scrolled through photos on his phone. As he said, the colors of the rocks making up the pentagram changed, and there were three different figures, each made of mud with some twigs, but each different. Besides the one standing before them, another had two heads and four arms, while the other was a snakelike creature with spines made of thorns.
âInteresting that the figures change with each change in the color of the pentagram,â Graham said. âNotice how the colors of the candles change too? Itâs a different ritual every time, to summon a different demon.â
The reporter gave him a nervous look. Graham went on. âUsually thereâs a containing triangle for either the summoner or the summoned, depending on the tradition. Notice here that thatâs lacking. They donât want the demon contained. Iâm thinking the summoner stood within the pentagram and wanted to release the demon into the world.
