Hasidism goes so far as to say that devekut should be the believer’s constant state of mind. Yet in prayer particularly there may be a mystical encounter with the Divine. The founder of Habad Hasidism, Shneur Zalman, speaks of prayer as:

the foundation of the whole Torah. This means that man knows God, recognizing His greatness and His splendour with a serene and whole mind, and an understanding heart. Man should reflect on these ideas until his rational soul is awakened to love God, to cleave to him and to His Torah, and to desire His commandments.
