SMART SPLURGING

April’s motto is “Diets don’t work, but healthy lifestyles do.” So she makes sure to plan for weekday and weekend splurges that allow her to satisfy her love for sweets, pizza, and pasta—without going overboard. By strategically working them into her plan and calorie goals, she’s always in control and never feels deprived of her favorite foods. During the work week, she’ll have a small daily treat, such as a sugar-free pudding cup or 1 to 2 squares of dark chocolate—just enough to get her chocolate fix.

On Saturdays April typically goes out to dinner and allows herself one more elaborate planned splurge. She either enjoys a “splurge meal”—usually pasta or pizza, her favorites—or splits a decadent dessert with her husband. Even when she’s indulging, she does so strategically. If she has a splurge meal, she only eats about half of the restaurant serving. When ordering pizza, she chooses thin-crust brick-oven style, topped with cheese and plenty of vegetables, such as mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes, to make her slices more filling.
