It was late when Jennie was ready for bed, but she went to her window, drawn by the night that had seemed to be friend her and lend some of its spell to the magic of the hours she had spent with Nigel. She gazed past the balcony railing, past the cluster of uneven rooftops, letting the stars pull her gaze. Endless reaches. That's how life seemed to her suddenly. She shifted her eyes, tired now, watching the stars blur, watching the dim yellow light pulse and weaken against the dark bulk that housed it.

With a gasp she put her hand to her mouth! The attic light stared back at her. She willed it to go out, but still it shone. A chilling sensation crawled along her back, and the room felt cold.

Jennie struggled to remember how Cornelia had said it that day weeks ago, when she had explained about the ghost of the little girl. "When there is sorrow or suffering in the house, when a person is in need, Sarah comes."

Jennie shivered. That makes no sense, she argued. No one's suffering now. She thought of Cornelia and the quiet,empty-faced Cynthia. She felt confused and a little afraid. She wished she could lean over and blow out the light; it seemed she could almost do so from here. Don't foretell trouble, Sarah, don't bring trouble with you. Just go away!

She turned from the window. It was anger she was feeling, though she wasn't sure why. Once under the warm covers, with her eyes closed, she tried to think about Nigel and picture his face, remember the feel of him beside her, touching her. But a white childish form, with no face at all, blew the magic to dust and left her with only a confused, lonely feeling as she drifted to sleep.
