ULTIMATE TRUTH IN FOUR PHILOSOPHICAL SCHOOLS

The ultimate truth becomes progressively more empty in the four philosophical schools, as indicated by the shading.

BUDDHIST VEHICLES

The reality of a buddha becomes progressively more immanent in tantra, as indicated by the shading.

It is important to see that Mipam does not portray Nyingma tantra as just a unique ritual system; he also emphasizes a special view. Tsongkhapa, in contrast, made the distinction between sutra and tantra by pointing to tantra’s deity yoga. Thus, Tsongkhapa argued that the distinction between sutra and tantra is not a difference in view, but simply a difference in method: tantra uses the method of ritual identification of the meditator and the deity. Mipam, however, argued that there is not only a distinct method, there is also a distinct view within tantra—namely, the indivisibility of purity (divine presence) and equality (emptiness), which we will see in this chapter. This view is put into play in how one identifies with the divine in the practice of deity yoga. Therefore, in presenting the distinction between sutra and tantra, there is a significant difference in emphasis, with Tsongkhapa focusing on method and Mipam highlighting the distinction in view (see translations 27 and 29).
