Chapter 17

“Finnegan’s dangerous.”

Erin said it into the dark of the bedroom, talking to a man she couldn’t see.

“He’s that, aye,” Carlyle replied. “You did know he was a gangster, didn’t you?”

“Well, yeah,” she said. “But I always thought…”

“You thought he was a funny, harmless lad, a bit touched in the head?”

“Something like that. Then I watched him fight three guys at once, all of them bigger than he was, and it wasn’t even a fight! It was more like watching one of those nature programs. You know, the ones with hyenas eating zebras alive. He chewed those bastards up, and I mean that literally! I’ve fought dozens of criminals, but I’ve never seen somebody fight that way.”

“He frightened you?”

She didn’t want to admit it. “Yeah,” she finally said. “A little. Not the way Mickey Connor did. Mickey was a son of a bitch, but he was human. I understood him. Finnegan’s different.”

“No fear, darling. He’ll be off the street soon enough.”

“I know. We’re counting the days now. It’s going to be strange, once this is all over. I won’t know how to act anymore.”

“Of course you will,” he said. “You’re what you’ve always been, a copper. And a damned fine one. It’s me will have to make adjustments.”

“Who knows?” she said, rolling over and putting an arm around him. “You might like being respectable.”

“I rather think I will,” Carlyle said.

“I think even Corky likes the idea,” she said. “You know he brought a woman, a good-looking one, into the Corner for dinner and didn’t even try to get her in bed?”

“I knew we’d had snow,” Carlyle replied. “But I’d no idea it was that bad. Hell’s frozen over, has it?”

Erin laughed quietly. “You’ve known him a lot longer than I have. Has he ever been like this about a girl before?”

“Not to my knowledge,” he said. “Perhaps you’ve appealed to his better nature.”

“I don’t think it was me,” she said.

“Miss Tommasino must be a truly remarkable lass,” Carlyle said. “And it must hurt Corky terribly to be parted from her.”

“It’s temporary,” she said. “Only until she testifies and we shut the O’Malleys down. After that, they can go wherever they want—together.”

“Have you thought it might be better to let this business with the Teamsters be?” he said. “Until after we’ve concluded our affairs, that is.”

“I don’t know if I can,” she said. “Finnegan’s hot on the trail. He stirred up the Black Bull guys on purpose. Maybe he wanted to shake something loose, or maybe he just thought it’d be fun. Either way, they know I’m onto them. Worse, they know Finnegan is, and he doesn’t give a damn about due process. If I don’t get this wrapped up fast, somebody else is going to get killed.”

“That’s an excellent point,” Carlyle sighed. “The road’s laid out in front of us, darling. All we need to do is walk it.”

“Corky promised to get me together with Courtney, the Teamsters guy. Do you know anything about him?”

“Nay, Corky’s the one to talk to on that count.
