CHAPTER 11
I got far enough outside town to teleport without being seen. When I appeared near my cabin, I led the ox toward the camp, deep in thought. I did not like rushing my plans. It was true that no plan survived the first few minutes of an engagement intact, but a well thought out plan had a much better chance than one created of necessity in a short amount of time.
A half dozen of my clan members saw me and gathered around as I brought the ox to them.
âI have purchased tools, a few weapons, some cloaks, material for clothing, needles, thread, some food, spices, andâ¦â I drew out a bundle and handed it to an older woman, âsome sweet cakes for the children. For after dinner,â I added as the eyes of a young boy at my feet widened as much as his smile did. The woman smiled at me, too, and whispered a âthank you.â
I left the supplies with the woman and one of the elders to distribute as they saw fit. There were others things I had to do. I slipped away quietly as the others focused their attention on what was in the packages carried by the beast of burden.
I could have teleported from where I was, but I had long ago developed the habit of isolating myself when disappearing. Even for those who knew about my abilities, there was an uncomfortable look in their eyes when I did it in front of them. So I went back to the cabin, looked around without really thinking about it, and teleported. To an area just outside Dannsmedynt.
I was far enough from the city that there was nothing of civilization around me. It was regrettable that I had to take the time to walk an hour to get into town, but it was worth it if I could keep others from knowing about my ability to teleport. Besides, I could just as easily think and plan as I walked as if I was sitting in my cabin. Probably more so.
Thoughts of everything I had ever learned about stealth, assassination, and infiltrating secure places raced through my mind as I walked. I still had no scheme when I came to the limit of the town proper. I pushed the plan-making to the back of my mind. I needed to focus. I was in the heart of the enemyâs territory and could not afford a mistake.
The city looked different than any I had visited recently. Whereas many of the cities were run down, dirty, and decrepit, Dannsmedynt was the opposite. It fairly shone in the midday sun, immaculately clean and perfectly maintained. Most of the streets were paved with stones and the buildings all seemed new. They probably were, built within the last five to eight years.
The people seemed happy, too, moving about with purpose and content with their lives. Their style of dress was different than the rest of Zhong, as were the designs of the buildings. In
