Chapter 7

Tara

The next day Ean showed up at my room and convinced me to go snorkeling with him on the other side of the island. I’d agreed to go out with him today, but I had to find a way to tell him I couldn’t see him after that. When we’d first started spending time together, I hadn’t counted on losing my heart to him this quickly, and the longer we delayed parting, the harder it would be in the end.

As we drove, he glanced at me and placed his hand over mine. “I know what you’re thinking. You believe we can’t make this work, but I want you to trust me. I’ll figure something out.”

I looked at him, and his expression was so sincere that my heart swelled in my chest. I yearned to reach over and hug him, but I restrained myself. Was it possible for us to continue seeing each other after our vacation was over? I wanted to believe it, but it was hard when I knew what we would be up against.

“You haven’t known me long enough to see that I keep my word,” he said. “But let me prove it to you. I will make this happen.”

I nodded uncertainly. “Okay.”

“Just don’t say goodbye before it’s time. I don’t want to lose one day with you.” He laced our fingers together and smiled encouragingly, and a sense of warmth filled me.

He really did care, and that meant a lot to me. I wasn’t sure how all the pieces would come together, but if he truly believed there was a way, I wouldn’t give up on us just yet. Honestly, I didn’t think for a second that I would find another man like him, and I didn’t want to. I’d never felt like this before. It was crazy how quickly it all happened.

We rented snorkeling gear, and I laughed at how goofy we looked with the masks on, but once we were underwater, my humor disappeared, and I stared in awe as a school of blue and orange fish glided by. It was as if we were in an underwater fairyland with vibrant colors all around us. It was beautiful and amazing and like nothing I’d ever seen before. We swam to a coral reef and observed several varieties of sea life. Golden starfish and sea plants swayed in the water. There were black-and-white striped fish and some with yellow and orange segments. My favorite were the iridescent rainbow fish, but there were so many others, I could have picked a new favorite every day if I’d wanted.

Ean tapped me on the arm, and I glanced to where he was pointing. A gigantic sea turtle swam by, and we watched with fascination as he didn’t seem fearful of us at all. After a few hours, we returned the snorkeling gear and sat in beach chairs on the sand. Once we dried off, we went back in the water to cool off once more. Ean’s eyes were always on me, following my movements, and it was hard not to take his attentiveness to heart.
